Ok long story short I stuffed up while I was checking my base timing and shorted out the red wire going to the cas. The engine stopped and noticed the laptop had lost connection to the ecu and the fuel pumps were continuously running.
My question is has something just tripped like a fuse or have I done something worse like fry the ecu?

Done a bit of a search over the net and am thinking I might have blown one side of the mpi relay which is why the fuel pumps are still going but no power to the ecu

The red wire from afm is fed from the mfi relay as you say. Check you getting power at the fat red wire on the mfi (pin3)
Power is fed to the mfi relay on the black/yellow. Check for power there. If no you blown fusible link under bonnet.
At key on, you should have power at pins 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Only the pump wire (black/blue) should not have 12v.

Yeh was a white 20 amp female fuse under bonnet looked intact when inspected but by passing proved it to be the fault. Good stuff 2 days til dyno time didn't need any major issues.
