Since I moved here from N.Z four years ago i've noticed that the prices of Japanese imports absolutely plummit.

I myself bought an E39a VR4 facelift for $15k just over 2 years ago and ending up selling it for almost half of that recently.

Its fairly obvious why this kind of thing is happening- and thats Japanese imports. I cant help but feel for the guys who spent good money on locally delivered Lancer EVO VIII's. 2 years later and there's the option of buying the MR version freshly imported from Japan for $20k less (or roughly 30% less) than what they paid.

The recent approval of GEN III Galant VR-4's and Legnum VR4's has opened another chapter in Austalia's JDM Mitsubishi portfolio, but at the cost of what? Driving down locally delivered models prices, which in turn makes the older cars loose more value.

Seeing cars like THIS ONE being able to be imported for so cheap is a good thing for some people, but for others its shithouse because of the depreciation of the cars they own.

Its a pitty that prices are being driven down but yet we still cant access the wide range of cars that Mitsubishi have to offer!!

Take the Airtrek TURBO-R for example..........

its different for the evos and the vr4s, they were released in australia, and the imports are driving prices down
compared to the new galants where they werent released
and all they are competing with is other imports

I'd be more concerned about how quickly all cars will depreciate in value over the next 10 or so years...

With petty prices going up, more people are selling in favour of a scooter or a tredly or bus or train, etc. So there's an oversupply of cars.

My next car I'm going to hold on to for as long as I possibly can, because I know I am going to lose plenty on it.

It will still suck, because I doubt I could make myself keep something for more than 5 years (18 months is the longest I've been able to pull off ). In 5 years time, petrol prices will most likely be through the roof and no matter what car I buy then it will depreciate like crazy.

Gah! :x I've got a headache now. I'm going to bed.

Now if all the Airteks looked like that it'll be one wagon I wouldnt mind in the driveway for the Mrs - those guards are pumped!!!

I know what you mean mate, not much more than a year ago you couldnt buy a Mitsu GTO without taking out a 2nd mortgage on your home but now you see them in the $20-30k mark because the 15 yr import rule brought a bunch in (its stopped now but it had already damaged the local market). These were $100,000+ sports cars in Australia when new!!! Good for a buyer now, but totally fukd if you paid big $$ for one 2 yrs ago

Is the Aus spec outlander based on an AIRTREK? sure looks mighty similar. If thats the case......... MITSUBISHI AUSTRALIA you suck balls

hmm it seems the drift craze is still keping the prices of silvias/180's sprinters/series 4 rx7 and skylines still up there. not so long ago the vr4 was on par with those prices i guess.

now the vr4 is really starting to become a p platers car (5 of us in frankston alone) and i feel is really breathing new life into the car. but anyways still compared with the local falcodoor offerings the evo 1,2,3 are still gonna hold alot more value despite being older against the vt vx etc.

(its 6 in the morning)

I actually saw the new Mitsubishi TV commercial for the first time last night. It was stating that the new Ralliart Evolution 9 and get this, the Ralliart Turbo Colt are now available in Australia. Ralliart turbo Colt? WTF for???? http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2006/05/mitsubishi-colt-ralliart-version-r.html . Dont get me wrong as I like variety but if Mitsubishi were aiming for the semi-performance minded customer, I'm sure they would rather fork out $30,000 for a 2nd hand EVO 4 rather than a $30,000 1.5 turbo Colt  With the price of fuel I suppose people are going to be minding the budget a bit more but honestly I would die if I saw the next Fast and the Furious come out with Ralliart Colt vs TRD Echo

My concern's are as they have been for a number of years now, that Australia will end up in a predicament as I believe New Zealand is at the moment. Imports are essentially worthless and have little value eg While i was in Aukland last year i seen a lot of vehicles similair to this offered for sale Toyota altessa (Lexus is200) 35000 km ex cond $11000. While this is great and provides a chance at owning an awsome vehicle for next to nothing until you see that the private car sales system is almost non existant with car yards flooded with grey imports offering low interest no deposit terms to move the surplus. Driving down prices also for Australian and european imports. Australia rely's heavily on the Automotive industry from Holden Ford Mitsi built locally and heavily subsidised from the government just to keep them afloat. To the aftermarket suppliers to the ordinary mechanics such as myself to keep food on our tables.
In short i drive and love imports and have done for some time now but i would still like to see fors regulate things as they did a few years back keeping that balance that keeps it all running smoothly.
