Hey Peeps,

When I turn my steering wheel it does not return completely to center (left or right) I was told that its my "Steering rack bushes" would this be correct? If so does anyone know a good mechanic in Brisbane that would actually have a clue of what he's doing enough to replace these?

Cheers!

so, if turning left it returns to slightly left of centre, and if turning right it returns to slightly right of centre?

self centering is caused by the trail on the front wheels or the amount of caster, this is not adjustable.
so it may be affected by bad wheel alignment ie. toe in or out affecting the self centering, or maybe the rack itself is dry and needs relubing.

if they are talking about the rubber bushes between the rack and the engine frame, they wouldnt have much to do with the centering action, unless the rack can move side to side in the mounts. check this by looking at rack and getting the wheel rocked from side to side (engine running or not) and checking for play.
there is also rack end bushes at the end of the rack, under the rubber boot. check these by peeling boot back and and moving tie rod end about checking for movement

you can see the rack bushes in the first pic

this may not be the same as yours, but the principle is the same

I have this problem also.
It's the bushes holding the steering rack to the firewall.
In my case, the steering wheel does not return to centre after a left turn, but a right hand turn will correct it.

So are these Nimbus bushes from Pedders going to fix my problem ? Are we talking the same thing here ?
