Hey all,

I just discovered on my EVO 1 GSR that my rack and pinion/steering rack is the reason why I constantly hear an audible "clunk" sound from the front end when turning 5 degrees left or right when car is off I also hear this sound when accelerating, decelerating, or comming to a stop (Clunk)

One of the rack an pinion/steering rack boots (passenger side) is torn, to which I have no idea when but I can see the silver rod inside the boot, to which I felt it and it felt dry.

So what are my options? new rack and pinion, rebuild, can I fix it? etc?

Does anyone have the part number for the rack and pinion/steering rack?

btw how dangerous is it or what can happen if I were to continue to drive the car?

In addition, I had previously posted about a tire rubbing on the passenger strut, could the rack and pinion also be a leading cause as to why the suspension on the passenger side is a little close to the strut causing the rubbing tire?

thanks ya'll :)

Id stop driving it immediately. Power steering racks are a shit to replace but you'll find one everywhere for sale and cheap too. You can grab one off a CC GSR, sedan, wagon or coupe... its the same unit to an EVO1. Hell even one out of a Proton will fit and work fine. I've changed several between Mitsu/Proton over time and they all fit up the same way, all do the same job. :) I believe the EVO II or III though had a different steering rack ratio at some point, but not the EVO 1 from memory.

Ooops jjust noticed you're in Canada... get one off a 92-96 Colt/Summit/Mirage mate :)

are they the same? If I could use one from a mirage or colt that would be alot easier to source. Are you sure they're the same or they just work?

Now on to discussion about the evo 2-3 if they have quick steering racks, since I'll be swapping out the steering rack perhaps I might as well change to a evo 2-3 rack?

YES, they are the same as the Colt/Summit so you'll have no trouble sourcing one in Canada :)

Just went to CAPS to confirm the EVO II and III and wouldnt you know it, they are all listed with the same part numbers (even though item numbers of the CE9A changed, the component part numbers all stayed the same).

I am sure there was a quicker ratio rack for the II & III... I remember reading up about it somewhere a while back but CAPS pretty much confirms what you need to know to get your car back on the road again :) See pic:

thank you so much for your time and info!!! and here I was starting to think I would have to put the car up for sale. :fuuuuu:

I will head out to the dealer first thing monday and get them to source me the parts, I will keep this thread updated how things unfold.

BTW in the pic you provided is that the entire steering rack or is it missing a side? I'm not sure what Part numbers I need to go in with to get them to check for an entire steering rack/ rack and pinion assembly

thanks again:thumbsup::w00t:

btw North american cars are on the left hand side, does this affect the steering rack/ rack and pinion in anyway? For example I use a North american steering rack (LHD) with a RHD car?

Yeah it does. Dude, just face it... you're screwed  You're going to need to find a RHD rack. I thought your car was LHD.

ouch!!! :fuuuuu: as if things can't get worse... well what I can try and do at this point is go to the dealer with the JDM part number and see if they can order me one. Is it possible to get it rebuilt? or perhaps by the internal parts and rebuild it myself? I see in the diagram you provided it provides pretty much everything internal.

Otherwise can I please get the part number for the entire steering rack assembly?

thanks

btw if anyone across the pond can help me I would really appreciate it!

I could send you one.......freight will hurt. for your own sake do this exercise. take a piece of plastic pipe ...{that the rack would slide inside} down to the local post office and see how much it would cost to send to pert west oz

By the time you buy a rack here second hand or new then.... freight it to canada ......you might be able to just order the parts you need from japan and repair yours

I think I said it before, but i'll say it again! Why not just get your one refurbished/reconditioned/rebuilt!? Surely there's someone who can do it in Canada???? All the ones on ebay are second hand units that have been rebuilt. That way- all you'll need is the correct CV's, which you could probably use off the model that EVO-00X listed above :)
