Says front fit type is sealed strut, and rear is stem with eyering and steel bushing...... whatever that means - just means teh strut and spring is separate, yeh?

You've got it correct.

Ours is an N23W/N23WG.

The Front is a Spring over Strut Setup and the read has a floating arm with separate spring.
 
they should just be stock replacements, Mitsubishi use KYB as standard for shock absorbers.

They maybe "KYB Excel G" which i have usually found worse than exact stock replacements.

All in all, if yours are leaking/stuffed, they will be better.
 
Mine are the originals, car has done 90 000kms now so running on the premise that shocks should be done about 40 000kms, I'd say they're well overdue.

These are prices for the Excel-G - what have you heard about them being a bad idea?
 
havent heard anything about them being a bad idea.

i have used them in two of my cars (all four corners) and my thoughts on them can be described scientifically as "meh".

as i said in the previous post, i believe the Excel G's are a bit worse than (new) stock, this can also be reflected in the cost of such shocks.

but as i also mentioned in my previous post, "if yours are leaking/stuffed, they will be better. "

Thought I'd get in on this thread (not hijack it) because I am going to go ahead and start the suspension upgrades - somewhat earlier than I had anticipated, but the soft and slight knocking noise that I thought I heard the suspension develop on the second day of the trip back from buying the HSG R turns out to be a "knackered" strut top mount (by the way, what is that called in English, the semi-flexible top mount point for the McPherson strut, where it actually attaches with three stud-bolt/nuts into the shock tower/vehicle frame? The mechanic here obviously told me the name in Spanish, but it is by no means a formally correspondent translation). Anyway, I am going to replace them both (originals with 170K km), if you gents can tell me where I can order them from and have them shipped here (Mitsu or alternative part numbers would be a tremendous help).

AND, since I am getting that done, and saw during the examination that one of the front struts is also on its "last legs," I decided to contact Pedders there later on to see about them shipping me a set of those Ryder springs that Dan found on eBay (and Konix got "sniped" on), as well as the shocks that show up on the same online catalog page. Before I do anything so rash, please refrain or redirect my madness if there are better alternatives (i.e.: should I just go with the KYB standard shocks and upgraded springs, etc., different ones, where can I get them). Also, what recommendations if any on upgrading bushings, putting in a strut mount brace (and something similar in the rear), etc.?

Now, I don't need the car cornering like an F1 or Kart, but I like the idea of 1" lower and better body roll control in the high-speed sweepers; so, changing all the main front steering and control components isn't necessary (nor is it financially feasible). However, since I am going to upgrade the shocks and the springs (and change the strut top mounts, don't forget - I really need you guys to help me out on that one), if you can suggest any other minor changes upgrades to complement the main goal, I would go ahead and do those too. Thanks.

That's pretty much spot on, otherwise known as a 'hat' in short term from what I'm aware of. However, I would be more inclined to say that the rubber insulator between the coil and hat has gone, just my 2c.

(Mitsu or alternative part numbers would be a tremendous help). Can get you a Mitsu part number for an Expo LRV or equivalent, they use same unit for that part of the suspension, though I wouldn't anticipate they be cheap, perhaps even a wrecker that deals with DSMs, might have some parts of a summit, or expo, etc.

I'm pretty sure there are some local businesses in the states that would be cheaper to buy these particular items from, *(based on freight cost) for the shocks, springs again, tricky, but maybe shipping from Japan for you would be slightly cheaper? get some springs Ti springs off Yahoo JP... Alternatively I know how you can get the adjustable KYBs sent to you.

Also, what recommendations if any on upgrading bushings, putting in a strut mount brace (and something similar in the rear), etc.? Perhaps just check all the bushes to make sure they are in tact, bushes through Mitsu are relitively cheap, and Expo parts are the same, so save on buying local parts... A rear strut brace apparently improves the roll a bit from what I have read on here from others.

However, since I am going to upgrade the shocks and the springs (and change the strut top mounts, don't forget - I really need you guys to help me out on that one), if you can suggest any other minor changes upgrades to complement the main goal, I would go ahead and do those too. Thanks. I reckon you're on the right track, springs, shocks, strut brace should make a good difference.

I've paid for mine that amount 5 days ago, BUT my bump stop rubbers were also gone :angry: so i had to pay another $74 for set of front ones.

Having a bear of a time finding anything conclusive on the 'net regarding the strut mounts - been at it on and off ever since I posted earlier (the shocks and springs having to wait). I am interested in the KYB adjustables, Dan (are those the "Premiums"?).

I'll have to start calling around tomorrow on the mounts...

See pic below re: strut mount, can you identify the part you believe at fault?
if it is the large bulb with the 3 studs (The insulator) then it will be RVR or Expo LRV specific
If it is the plate beneath that (The seat) then there is an array of Mitsu to get that part from
If it is beneath that, then it is simply a bushing (Pad) again, a large array for parts.

edit: re: the shocks, sorry, not sure what you mean by "premium" they are known as KYB New SR, which is adjustable damper.

KONI AGX (i think) are really good adjustible dampers. along with a Ground Control (GC) adjustible spring platform.

You got me on that one, Dan - I have no idea which specific component of the assembly is failing, and the mechanic here basically indicated to me that the standard way of handling it is to replace the entire mount assembly. I did find an Expo mount assembly kit at a suspension supplier in the US (at least, on their website), but the description specifies 2WD, so I doubt that it will work for the HSG R. I intend to call them directly to inquire further, but am sure that I will encounter that which I have everywhere else when telling them what vehicle this is for: "HUH?!?"

That image that you posted - is that the actual RVR diagram, or just something general to facilitate the discussion and identification of the parts?

Regarding the KYBs, I found the Excel Gs on another site in the States, and listed alongside them are KYB "Premium" (equivalent part for the Excel G part number/vehicle application) - at a higher price point - hence my question earlier.

This strut mount thing has now become my overriding obsession, so I am going to start making calls and go to the Mitsu dealer here (although they are terrified of the HSG, because they can't track its VIN in their system, being a direct import and non-Chilean model, and so it renders them incapable of rationally dealing with the vehicle - you know: "If it isn't in my system, then it doesn't exist, even although it's right here in front of my face" [I can almost see Dorothy clicking her heels together and saying, "There's no place like home, there's no place like home." I imagine that this sort of thing inspired the final line of your signature.]). Anything else you guys can come up with is appreciated.
