So with the official public release of Winblows 7 today,

I thought i might ask who's been using it and what your thoughts are?

worth upgrading?
wait abit?
just another windows?

I am looking at getting some more ram (8gb) and buying the 64bit version at the same time, still not entirely sure though.

My brothers been using it. He's an IT professional and his only words to me were "Like all Microsoft products, wait for Service Pack 1"

Why? no idea.
Have i used it personally? No.

Looks expensive, I shelled out for Vista Ultimate and that runs quite well, not sure the upgrade is worth it yet. I'm more interested in its compatibility with older software/drives which Vista was not well supported.

All the businesses I deal with are still running XP networks.

8gb and win7 64bit works really nicely

99% percent of devices with vista sp1 drivers have driver support under windows 7, so there is no real need to wait for driver support. If you go with ultimate or professional you have a feature called xp mode (basically allows you to run any proprietry software in a xp virtual machine).

alot of work has been put into win 7 and its alot more polished release then any other MS OS of recent times.

i have been using it for 3 months now, and am quite impressed by it.

if your looking for a cheap upgrade and your a student goto www.itsnotcheating.com.au if not
you should be able to pickup an OEM version (because your a "system builder" - read err building your own PC) for a reasonable price. try somewhere like www.itsdirect.com.au

i work as a senior key account manager for a national IT distributor and we are 1 of 3 microsoft australian OEM distributors.

hope that answers some questions

It's definitely a knee-jerk reaction for all Windows IT Support guys to automatically not be early adopters and preach "Wait for SP1"

I'm a Systems Administrator and have been using the 32 bit of Windows Seven ever since the beta came out, and have found it to be excellent.

I've found Windows 7 will detect and load drivers for pretty much everything on the machine on first install, even where XP wouldn't - and on legacy hardware too...

The biggest advantage is being able to jump on board the fundamental shift in desktop platform architecture to 64bit.

Although from a home user point of view, that means generally means a major upgrade on the hardware front.

Oh, and for anyone with a PS3 and a wireless connection, the PS3 detects the media shares on your Win7 machine automatically. Vista might do this too, but I jumped straight from XP to Win7

Ive moved from 64bit Vista with 4GB RAM to 32bit Windows7 with 4GB RAM. Win7 runs a lot smoother with what seems to be less hang time during daily use.

Ive been running an o'seas retail version for the past month or so and working good so far. I really dont like where the 'show desktop' button is on this one (all the way to the right of the screen next to the clock), and I wish I had more control on what kind of shortcuts I can add in the taskbar. I used to put shortcuts to often used places and drives in there in XP and Vista but for some reason Win7 doesnt allow a simple shortcut there now :( That was a backward step in my opinion.

Internet Explorer 8 still has compatibility issues with many sites so I've just gotten used to use the 'compatibility' feature from the tool menu. It was annoying in some forums where the text box would play up and go to the home position whenever I was typing a few lines.

As far as gaming goes I feel that its actually improved the frame rate and doesnt use as much RAM resource to keep Windows running?? Not sure if this is the case but my games seem to run a lot smoother now with my DX10 graphics card.

Only problems Ive had is plugging in my Kodak digicam via USB. It just wont recognise it. Kodak doesnt have drivers for it either... bit of a mystery.

Also a couple of software programs Ive tried to install liked XP and Vista, but arent compatible with 7. i.e. Commodo Firewall and Tuneup Utility type stuff.

Ive been hanging off installing the x64 version and more RAM due to it being a new OS and I remember what it was like with Vista when I went x64 too early. Basically stopped using my month old printer and old digicam and stuff.

Windows 7 is the shit.

I've never seen an OS that the corporate world is ready to adopt so quickly.

If I wasn't lazy all of my home machines would be Windows 7 now, but I am.. so it's just the netbook. Yep, a 1.8ghz netbook with 2gb ram runs it like a champ!

There's no point in waiting for SP1. It was more reliable than Vista before it was even RC1.

Any new windows is problem riddled until the later service packs. I'd probably wait about a 6-12 months for them to iron out the bugs.

Every major windows package...... 95,XP,Vista has been the same in terms of problematic issues with 1.0

not really the case with Win 7 though.

As it is basically vista, but optimized and tweaked.

you could probably consider Win 7 as Vista SP4.

Yeah windows 7 is basically the most reliable out of the box Microsoft OS I've ever used.

But whatever.. Some people like to stick with what they know and trust. Like Nokia 3210's. lol

Woohoo! That shortcut 'how-to' worked for me :)
I've put all my favourite shortcuts next to the START button again (with little icons) :)

Have run windows y x86 and x64 on my pc and laptop since the beta came out and swapped them to the RC when it was released and will buy it when the current licence runs out (april next year i think it is for RC??)

Faultless! Vista crashed frequently for me using Adobe (lightframe/photoshop mainly). No such issue with 7 and everything was plug and play, windows update went and found all the files/updates, including my G15 which never worked right in vista...

an operating system i'll actually buy ;)

I just installed win7 pro oem on this pc, seems ok. Not happy about them taking away the "classic start menu", the new one is shit, but I guess there's 3rd party programs, but still.

Secondly, file sharing on a home network seems difficult, maybe I haven't set it up correctly. When you take off file sharing from a folder, it then has this silly padlock which is annoying.

Thirdly, I'm not sure I like Windows Explorer Pin thing on the taskbar. If you have multiple windows open, you have to highlight that icon, and it will show you all the windows you have open, I'd just prefer each window open went along the taskbar individually. Not sure how to do that though. :S

Only played with this since v.late last night, and winzip 10 is being gay and wont let me close & remove quick pick (cant select the option).

ewww winzip :p

keep playing with it lefty (that came out wrong lol).

you can customize it back to winxp styles, but you actually get used to the new features pretty quickly. my fav is the show desktop button/hover feature
