does the noise sound like its comming from the injectors / rocker rover area?

if so, same with mine..

sounds very similar

wow..
they sounded almost like my car!.. ended up spinning a big end bearing.. could that noise cause some kind of oil pressure drop or something?.

OIL PRESSURE is fine... big end bearings, all other bearings r brand new... keep in mind the car never ticked in its life till i blew my head gasket... kept driving the car with blown head gasket, NOT thrashing it what so ever, then a ticking noise happened just outta no where... replaced tappits, no help... cheeked rocker arms they r fine...
compresson test
140 140 140 140

just done a service, oil change n additive did not help...

When you say you replaced the tappets, did you replace them with brand new items or did you replace them with other second-hand jobbies? There's no use putting in second hand ones unless you give them a really good cleaning prior to installation. If you did replace them with brand new ones, did you get some of the newer style 3G lifters that Meek sells? Apparently they have larger oil holes and don't get full of as much gunk.

As for the oil additive, is this the lifter-free tuneup stuff that is sold in the little black bottle by Nulon? If it is, the instructions clearly state that it doesn't take effect straight away and can take up to 500km's, I've used this stuff and it does quieten them down a little, but the noise returns eventually.

My next step will be to try some of these 3G lifters that are supposed to have larger oil holes and stop the ticking from occuring as you don't hear of the later model evo/GSR engines ('94 onwards) having such bad ticking issues. Well I've never seen/read/heard anything from various people I know who own later model 4G's, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

the tippits r brand new... i have done at least 3 3 oil changes... when i put the new tippits in... the noise was still their... i dont think it is the tappits... i got the head TESTED n CLEANED... then installed new tappits, but installing them the correct way with lub (oil) put it all together... started it TAP TAP TAP... never went not once... dont think i would have something blocking it already...

i still got the old ones... could try cleaning them n installing them back in?

i've just removed all my lifters and also my rocker arms

i replaced the arms with good ones (had about 50 to choose from)
some of the ones in the motor had a bit of play in them..

also bled all my lifters which are 3g items, they all had oil in them and all were pumping once bled...

i put them in dry (no priming) so after the first start, it was bloody noisy..
ill leave it running for a bit today and see how it goes...
hopefully the noise will go...

SXYGSR when you installed the brand new lifters did you bleed the air out of them? I have heard that if this is not done they may not bleed up for a while and in that time could become damaged and then always be noisy..

ok i've noticed something new about the ticking...

i started it up this morning... n i was like god i wish this ticking would go away... i gave the car a little rev, n i was like OMG their gone, Gave it a bigger rev... no ticking... i was in so much shock!

called my mate to tell him... anyways, got back in the car n gave it a rev again... TICKING BACK... i noticed in the morning the ticking is not their AT ALL when car is worm it is their... weird or not?

nope, that sounds pretty normal for ticking lifters :?

damn things

I remember way back in the day at Ohlsen Developments in Onehunga, a guy got his lifters changed because they ticked so much.

2 weeks later, the new ones started ticking again!

we should have done a group buy on the proma MBL8, i wouldnt mind some for myself too.

well if someone can get this this "Proma MBL-8" i'll try it... i'v tried buying it over the net but they want cedit cards n shit... so if anyone can get some, or something, i would some...

mmmm normal for tappips... arrrr, it sounds like the back lefters or something... not the front...

getting it from http://www.freeflying.com.au/maintenance.asp
sent them a email to give me their bank info...

I thouhgt your already getting some??

listening to the video and from what youv explained sounds like multiple lifters.
i have a similar prob where i just replaced my head gasket and know firing it up for the first time it has a very loud tick like one lifter but 10 times louder. thought it would go away after oil warmed up abit but no.
cant pin point it 2 a cylinder but sounds like its in no.2.

dont worry all good. i pulled out a couple of lifters from no.2 and played with them before putting back in. they were noisey for little while them came good. geez im good! :p

OMG this is what i have, hope someone finds the solution its a fraken enoying noise ey?
How much for this "magic" lubricant stuff?
Im in for a group buy if its not rediculessly expensive
Cheers
Jamie

Ah 4G93 noisy lifters - notorious for it. The type of oil can play a big part in it but with Meek selling new lifters for a lot cheaper than before it might pay just to get a whole new set. Sometimes lifters will come good within 1000km (after an engine rebuild), but if not you have to conceed that you cant fix plain old wear and tear, and replacement may be the only solution. If some people are having problems with new ones ticking as well then I would be looking at oil pressures and possibly pulling the engine down and cleaning out the oil galleries in case of blockage or whatever.
