my plans were better front pads
new fluid + bleed
semi's (ive been told street tyres will get hacked up in just one day)
also dial in some more camber

that was my list for the first day

As a cheap starter the pad the QFM A1RM pad would be good.

Penrite Sin at $20 per 500ml is good and I can't get it to boil.

I would buy a cheaper semi semi. Like the Kuhmo KU36 or the Federal 595 RSR if you buy anything at all for your first session. I just paid $1200 for my 195/55/15 Semis and that was cheap. You don't want to outlay all that cash and find out you don't like it. I wouldn't buy anything at all. Just run with what you have and give it a shot.

Camber will assist with your road tyres surviving the day but you will need it dialed out after the event.

yeah i was quoted $350 each of silverstone semi's so i was prob going to go them. Also have the option of the kuhmo for similar $$ as well.

Funny you meantion the queensland pads as i already have the prices lined up for them as well :D

the ebc greens in the car i dont think will cut it plus they are faily warn.

i have fitted castor bushes etc and im running like 4 deg castor but not much camber atm.

but everything has been stalled at the moment, Pending todays lunch time inspection at the mechanics to tell me if im in need of another clutch or gearbox component or a new crank.

we will see.

I wouldn't bother with semis for your first couple of outings tbh.

Use your street tyres and a less aggressive camber setup that you can maintain on the road and just learn your lines and how your car performs and behaves at speed when you track it.

Semis will give you more speed everywhere - into, through and out of corners - which translates to faster straightline speed and that can catch unwary players out....

Besides - you'll cut up a softer set of semis with incorrect setup/driving faster than you will a set of road tyres.

doesnt matter now, aint going to happen for me. dreams shattered for this year :(

but least i know for next time round i will just go out like it is and just learn first before the semis

Good advice do you reckon maybe a set of really cheap "so called " performance wheels from China each time I go out?? say for around 100 a corner to start with?? knowing full well they would be shot after the first couple of outtings.

My mate use to have a P Island record at one stage and said he won some kinda title cause he use to get new set of tyres every time they raced. He said they where cheap but new.

Do tyres really mean that much???

tyres make a massive difference to grip gooch but will accentuate any problems in the suspension because they generate alot more load

yes Tyres are Everything!!!

no matter how well sorted your suspension is, how much power you had and how good your brakes are... tyres are what sticks it all to the road!..and if you have no mechanical grip from your tyres nothing else will work as well as it could.

Syspension is almost as important, as that will allow your tyres to work efficiently... if your suspension setup doesnt allow the tyres to use their grip, then they are next to useless.

IMO caster isnt everything, pay attention to wheel aligment settings, that can make a huge difference, it pays to spend some $$$ on a good alignment before a track day by a suspension place that knows what they are doing - this goes back to making your tyres work as they should/can.

Final point, brakes are everything, no point having heaps and heaps of power if you cant stop propperly (and safley)... not only will you go quicker with the ability to stop, it helps avoid having a massive crash when your pedal goes to the floor...spend the cash on good pads (personally recomend ferodo DS2500 as a minimum), and good fluid like motul RBF600 etc..

cheers

Stick with street tyres for as long as you can. Once you go semislicks, you can't go back.
And once you put semi's on, and dial up an absolute minimum of 2 degrees of neg camber at the front to start making the most of them, then they will show you just how bad your brakes and suspension really are. And so begins the downward spiral of bringing the rest of your car up to scratch just because of those stoopid sticky tyres that you thought might be a good idea to buy.

I have done only a couple of track days, - without cams licence, and agree with what shane said:

Stick with your road set up to see how you like it, but make sure your brakes are up to scratch and tyres are at least in good condition. ON my most recent day, my rear tyres weren't that great, and as a result i ended up in the barrier at Sandown after a bit of rain greased the track up and my rear gave way. Didn't think I was pushing it either.

See how you like it, then start considering other tyres, better suspension and brake set up roll cage, seats etc.

Speaking of which, must get onto putting my Evo onto the track for the first time!

I remember that incident

Glad you and the car came away from it alright (heck - you even got an EVO front end out of it mate!!)

Get the EVO into gear and head up to Winton, it'd be good to catch up and run a couple of laps.
