Hi All,

I have just removed the gearbox from my GSR and uncovered a little secret that all of you should be interested in.

Everyone seems to think the transfer case is filled from the top of the unit via the removal of that rubber cap thing.

Well there is actually a filler plug, and many people here may well have too much oil in their transfer cases.

That rubber cap is just a breather for the unit, the actual filler is like on the gear box and is #2 in the following diagram.

To get access to the filler though is a mission and a half!

You will need to remove the exhaust to be able to remove the bolts at #2. Then unbolt the bolts highlighted at #1 & #2 in the following diagram to get access to the filler at #3. There must be an easier way though as a transmission service would cost you a fortune at mitsubishi otherwise (doesn't it anyway  :)

Then just pump it full of oil until it is level at that point (make sure the car is level) Last time I put a lot more than the 500ml that is recommened, that because I filled it up through the wrong hole.

an old bicycle pump works a treat in filling up your transfer case bear in mind it does take quite a few fill ups of the pump but unless you want to buy a proper pump it will do for the budget boys

you shouldn't have to remove the exhaust to get at it?

I didn't know of the rubber cap thingi?

I have always used the filler bung. 8)

The real thing (like a bike pump is called a MAGNAUT PUMP well thats the brand and the name, but it holds 500ml and has a 400mm hose on it and can be used any angle and pumps just like a bike pump :?

But yes it would be more expensive than a cheap bike pump but it is made to pump oil. so it will last! You can also remove the plunger and use it as a funnel too

just my 2 cents worth .. but you can have it for free :D

yeh wtf? who has tried to fill in in the top? that front one is the fill hole, so it fills to the correct level. and you shouldnt need to remove any exhaust!
