hey guys, cars been acting a bit weird. boost doesnt hit til 4-5rpm...way too late. its a 2L td05 small 16g. there looks to be a small oil leak. could the turbo be on its way or am i having to look else where for this weird problem.
cheers

Need more symptoms. Any noises on idle/driving (metallic noises), where's the leak coming from exactly?
Blowing any smoke - what color?
If your worried about the turbo, an easy check is to take off your intake pipe and have a look at the compressor wheel. Check for damage and any excessive shaft play.

First thing to do is check the basics.
Check the plugs, clean and gapped properly.
Check the base timing.
Air filter clean.
Check for air leak(s).
TPS setting

Have a few issues with my turbo too, using some oil - like 1litre between oil changes (5000km) and when I checked the compressor outlet pipe, there was a fair bit of oil in the housing, I dunno probably 10-15ml?

Didn't seem to be much shaft play, a little bit I guess.

Some smoke on max boost and high rpm, but nothing at all on startup or idling etc. I do however, get a lot of black crap around my rear bumper. Plugs aren't too bad

Apparently compression is around 150psi on each cylinder from what the guys at springy motors told me.

Hard to tell if its better for me to replace turbo (small 16G) or save up for an engine rebuild if the motor is just worn.

You usually know if your turbo is dying- it'll make high pitched noises, smoke on idle, smoke on boost and heaps of smoke any time (then you really know its fucked)

I'm with manny- check the simple stuff first, especially leaks in your cooler system.

Oil in your cooler pipes is to be expected, to a certain extent.....

Maybe it's your huge rims, brakes and bodykit which is weighing the car down RicKii!! :p

But seriously - if the turbo is making weird noises like a whining or whirring noise it could have damaged compressor blades.

Rip your intake pipe off and look in the compressor housing to check the blades, then if that doesn't reveal anything, you might be best to remove the turbo and check the wastegate isn't stuck open or the turbine blades aren't stuffed.

Also, oil in the housing, and smoking under boost would lead me to believe Turbo seals. But its hard to say without being there...

lol thanks for the help guys, im looking to do a boost leak test over the next couple of weeks. gonna make one from the vfaq site. the shaft feels fine..minimal play. black smoke on boost though. no hissing weird noise or stuff from the turbo. there is blow by oil, im just using ngk plugs gapped at .8mm.

hmm, if it's boosting that late I'd suggest you might have a pre-turbine exhaust leak, check the head-manifold, manifold to turbo bolts are tight.
Remove the heat sheilds and check for cracks.

First thing i'd do though, check the wastegate is closing properly.
The actuator arm on mine was bent when I got it so the w/g was sitting open 3-4mm. I spaced the actuator from the compressor housing with 2 washers so there is slight tension on the w/g (not too much or the boost will spike) and it transformed the car (into a faster car).

How much boost are you running ... it will hit 10 psi alot quicker then 20psi for example. My Car doesnt hit 20psi til 4000RPM ( same turbo ). Which I thought was slow too, but thought it was normal for this car because of the crappy cams.

alright guys, ive just taken her out for another spin after awhile, redone all the exhaust/turbo bolts up tight, boost picks up still late and then dies off after 5,500rpm..feels like no power is being made...quite frankly feels like shit. another symptom?

check the o2 sencer if not the could be a leak in the cooler piping or ajust ur ideal there could be other things too like airflow meter.
