One of those annoying small things that are almost not there but are noticeable enough to shit you.

Just as you are coming on boost..mostly 2 nd gear..car seems to get vibration through wheel and cabin..only slightly though, sometimes you can feel it through the wheel or if its quiet with the windows up you can hear the windows vibrate in the rubber seals...sorta like a wheel balance vibration..

Ayone get that?
wheel balance? Engine mount?

i had the same thing too, sounds like the same thing anyway...

with mine, it was actually a snapped balance shaft belt. that would be the first thing i would check. mine was just sitting at the botton of the cover all shredded up.. real scary, and could kill ya engine if it gets caught in the timing belt and makes it jump. just check that first, as it is the most critical for your pocket health:)

maybe even a collapsed tail shaft centre bearing..

You mean like a carrier bearing, that supports the tailshaft...?
Interesting...what makes you think that? have you had it happen or seen it happen before?
Come to mention it...theres noise when i back off arounf 2500 rpm kinda like a grumble from the rear of the car

i had all the timing case apart around a month ago and it all looked ok...the marks were lined up as well...it does remind me a little of the mid range vibration caused by the balance shafts being out of phase etc.....how bad was the vibration when you had the snapped belt?

ditto for that, was the cause of the vibration under acceleration in my old VR4, was only noticible in 2nd and 3rd really.

Ditto?
sorry if im an idiot...but what that mean?

So the tailshaft bearing is a good culprit then?
Do you mean the bearing was shagged or the rubber support around it was loose and worn?

Did you get it replaced and it went away?
Is there 3 of them or two?

yea pretty easy to tell if you carrier bearing is stuffed.

get under the car, grab the tail shaft up by the carrier bearing, give it a good yank side to side, up and down, it should be "firm" if you can move it around easily, i would say that its liekly to be a contributor to the vibration.

i actually just wrote a reply on how to replace one of these here
http://www.galantvr4.org.au/public/viewtopic.php?t=8992&highlight=

so its more to do with the rubber supports letting the shaft swing around then?
Come to think of it there are scrape marks on the exhaust where it looks like the tailshaft has touched it..

Just think how fast that tail shaft is spinning around when yoru doing just 60k's an hour. The tiniest amount of movement will cause a vibration. Thats why tail shafts are balanced. The same prinicple a balancing a wheel/tyre so that when it spins it spins true, other wise vibrations will be caused and felt.

My Galant curently has a shagged centre/carrier bearing and I get a very noticebale vibration thorugh the driveline in 2nd and 3rd when giving it shit. Only reason I haven't done anything about it is even at internal pricing my dealership still wants $250 for one!

As T04Garett said, if you grab the tailshaft near the centre/carrier bearing it should have very little movement and feel quite snugg in the rubber. If it is sitting towards the bottom of the rubber with no pressure on it, or you can move it around quite easily/sloppy then it is shagged.

Hope it helps.

$250  ouch.

I thought $180nz was steep....

vibration could also be caused by worn uni joints - best to replace them at the same time anyway, saves pulling the tail shaft out again later.

And while you have the shaft out don't forget to seal up the yoke!

:D Is that really necessary Tim? :D

Worn rear engine mounts can put the tailshaft on the wrong angle and cause it to vibrate as well.

If your balance shaft belt breaks, you get a shite load of vibration at nearly all revs, much like running on 3 cylinders.

Just to add my 2cents.

My car has been getting the shakes + some grinding noise when coasting in gear. It goes away when I put even the slightest bit of throttle on.

I have just had my tail shaft centre bearing replaced and it seems to have fixed alot of the problem. There is still a bit of a rattle at times but on the whole the car is much "nicer" as well as being able to coast further.

Cheers,
John

I got the same noise...is t at around 2800-2200 rpm?

If so i wll be the happiest man alive if i replace mine and the noise goes away...

Which bearing was it?
Because there are two..one at the gearbox and end and one around a foot or so from the diff...

ve heard doing the uni joints is a help and the balancing of the whole shaft help too

I think there was noise thoughout the rev range (although not much at all under 2k). I think it felt worse around the 2.5k - 3.5k mark cause it caused a harmonic.

Not exactly sure which one it was - they just said "Prop Shaft Bearing".

It was $211 supplied & installed from TechSport. $60 does seem cheaper than what they were quoting from memory.

thats just the centre bearing (driveshaft bearing, carrier bearing) i would say there would be a bit of work taking it out and putting in a new one, tho i have never done one so couldn't be sure
