4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Ive had a look at mine and the bearing (closest to the diff) seems to sit at the bottom of the rubber and i can move it pretty free up to 10mm.
This sound no good?
After pushing it up 10mm its pretty much sitting in the centre...but im not sure if theyre designed to run in the exact centre or not...
Anyone know?
I may take it in to a shop and have it looked at to be sure..

Hey Craig does $60 include the rubber support as well?

Thats cheap.

Thanks.

I think there was noise thoughout the rev range (although not much at all under 2k). I think it felt worse around the 2.5k -

If at all could you describe the noise..?

Mines a kind of deep grumble and it sounds like its in the rear toward the diff...Is that what yours was like?
It goes away if you apply the brake or accelerator as well..

Thanks heaps for the feedback...this is the closest ive come to finding the source of the noise.

Yep.. a deep grumbling was exactly how it sounds.
Seems it was worse coasting downhill as well.

At times I could actually feel it knocking around under the car but it seems to come and go.

Just as an update, while the car is much smoother as a result of changing the bearing the same noise is there at times (albeit much quieter).

The friendly chaps at Techsport mentioned that the rear diff had some "kick-back" but they didn't feel it was the cause of the problem.

Cheers,
John

Im chasing the source of the noise..
How loud/noticeable is it in your car?
Id appreciate if youd let me know of Any updates towards finding it..
Likewise ill let you know if i come across any info thats helpfull.
When you said you heard it knocking under the car...was that during acceleration?
Ive heard that if that bearing has enough movent the shaft can swing around and knock things..

From every one ive spoke too...they think the noise is either a balancing issue of the propellor/tailshaft and or uni joints/shaft bearings etc..more or less to do with something associated witht the tailshaft....

The other thing i have heard is the possibillity of the flywheel being incorrectlly machined and causing unbalance/drivetrain stutter and harmonics...which is funny..cos the noise occured about a week after i had a clutch put in..

Ive also spoke with rob323 on this forum who has extensive knowledge toward the issue and he has spoken with people who rally VR4's and it is of their opinion that it may be an issue with the Crosspin which house the spider gears in the Centre Diff.
He has pictures of it etc...

I had a funny vibration at higher revs, it felt like something was shaking and hitting something. I initially thought it was the motor and exhaust due to no flex pipe so i chucked the car on the hoist, looked around noticed that a carrier bearing was loose....

As soon as I tightend it up, the vibration was gone.

Still has a bit of play, but it fixed the problem so I'm not too concerned.

An example of the sound without hearing it , would be like when you turn off the tap, and some water pipes vibrate. very similar to that...

Another example, when the vr4 was stockish, as I decellerated it would make a funny wooop wooop woop noise.... Never fround the problem, but assumed it was the transfer case as it was leaking fluid (like they all do) and was probably close to running dry.

Don't go blowing wind up my ass just yet, I haven't found the exact cause of the problem yet either.

Aha
You will though
Im telling you to!!
:D

One thing we noticed when we changed the yoke on BennyG's car was that the rubber bushes which seperate the carrier bearing mount from the chassis were toally flogged out and in some cases, non existant. Ben bought new ones from Meek but hasn't yet fitted them. If you were getting new carrier bearings, it might also pay to replace those bushes if they appear to be at all worn or cracked.

Thanks

Before prop replace it was loud enough match with my stereo. Now it is more of a background noise but still easily distingishable if the stereo is off.

The knocking under the car is only when coasting (no accell and most noticable around the 3k RPM range).

As many other people have mentioned in the other thread, I too began to get it when I upgraded my clutch to a 5puk Excedy
