OK... so this is just a pipe dream at the moment.. anyway I am really hurting for an old car right now (haha), pretty much I've realised that cars like galants will always be around and easily obtainable, and I have only a few years left where old cars can be reasonably practical. Obviously if I get something else, the galant needs to go.. however..

I paid quite a lot for the car (11k, about 2 years ago now), and now it seems people are selling similar cars for less than half that.. what's going on with the VR4 market?? I don't necessarily want to sell the car right away, but if it's only going to be worth 4-5 grand in a years time I'd like to move it on before then... what, realistically, could I get for the car in it's current trim ? (obviously it would be tuned before sale, current specs I'd estimate 190-200 kw at the wheels)

I'd say it really depends on the condition of the car overall and how much a buyer wants it..

The ones that do sell for that low (5k) are obviously tired and need work.

vr4s are worth nothing these days!
no one wants them and they are so hard to move..

look at troy (WRCVR4) he had a very good vr4.. with ALOT of aftermarket parts, he couldnt even sell that for 5k so he decided to part it!

In all honestly i have not seen a VR4 in the last 2 years sell for a good price.. most are priced around 5k if not less!
If i were you i would hold onto it til u can afford to upgrade.

The reason i think the VR4 has dropped ALOT in price is because.
a. the aussie dollar in the last 24 months.. its been real strong
b. cheap Evo V-VIII imports, they are so low that they have driven down the evo market. hence vr4 market too.
c. Evo 1 - 3 or replica's you can find for 10k quiest easily, when afew years back they were still worth 15-20k quiet easily!

Supply and Demand plays the largest part.

A very good example is the AE86 market.. POS cars (condition wise) but they are willing to pay since they are so rare and guys want to be mad dog drifters...

The Galants just didn't have a great following in AUS.

I think for a while they were quite overprices (the Aus spec ones especially). Same deal with Liberty RS's. For some reason they held their value a lot. The weird thing is, I don't believe the demand was ever really there for them.

The whole ass end has fallen out of the car market. VR4's are in the middle ground now. Not a classic, and for the money a nice one is worth (say $12k), for a bit more you can get something a lot newer.

Hmm... Probably should have held out for a few months to buy a galant. John makes a good point with WRCVR4's car.. that thing was magic, I can't believe he parted it out!!! This is a shame, I was really hoping to get something like this

I doubt things as (relatively) cheap as this (I have seen bog stock 6 pot torana S's (Not even SL's with nice interior or two side mirrors lol) go for this much..) will be around by the time I can afford to get one.. ah well.
Obviously cars like these will become less and less common (people with unrealistic expectations of their "investment car" will just hold onto them)

Looks like I'll just spend money on the worthless old galant and hope it appreciates. Theres not that many aus spec's left surely, what with all the people parting them out..

You know whats weird, in the US it's the same thing with galants, on galantvr4.org if someone blows a gearbox they just part the car out...

its the new laws which P-Platers cant have turbo cars which kills the market, VL turbo's where selling for around $10K and now ive seen a few for $3K, also a 450hp skyline R33 $4500, its crazy cheap for cars like this, only the rare cars will keep value at this stage

P platers are the ones with the most random money to spend on a turbo car, now we have no access to that market. And at 21 they either have enough money to buy something better (debatable), aren't interested in cars anymore (have kids or drug addictions) or have other issues (school, house, etc).

its kinda depressing at times to see a red "p" plater on a recent S2000 fully worked.... since when did we have the cash for that when we were that young....

i do remember a few guys on here with "p" on there car when we first met.... so it was a good market then..

Ah.. but we don't have those P plate laws here in SA yet... so maybe I'll be OK in the short term. I must say that the VR4's that sell in SA are a bit more expensive.... I just attributed that to adelaide people being unable to take a loss (I knew a guy that wanted to sell a car for more than he paid for it about 8 years ago... he had put K's on it and dented it and everything.. )

Adelaide and Perth have always been that bit more expensive. I guess people in Adelaide and definitely Perth are less likely to buy from another state, unlike the east coast where it's not so much of a big deal.

yeh GSRs have dropped so much in price, i remember looking for 3years back and they were going for $10k+ for stock ones! now you can pick em up with a 2L for less than that!

and vr4's are also getting rather old now.

Yes but look at the price of "classic" cars... it's much easier to get bits for lancers than galants..

What I'm trying to get at is, surely a part of the price has to do with how easy it is to fix if it's not quite right, ie if the car is really straight that's a bonus because straight panels are hard to come by. (good example is HQ monaros, hugely overpriced even if it looks shitty and doesnt drive, if the panels are clean and straight).

Look at the price of 180sx's, when I was looking at getting an import manual sr20det's were between 15-20k, whereas galants were 11-12 at the pointy end.. and now galants are close to the same price (I've seen people selling rb20 180s for 10k... )

What I'm saying is they haven't depreciated relatively as much (top end galants are still selling for what, 9k?). I'm actually a bit more happy about having a galant now, seeing people drop r33 gtst's for 7500 lol...
