Hi guys,

I will be putting a welded centre diff into my car. just don't know if i need a VCE or not or if it will even make a difference.

Cheers

I believe you have to lock the Viscous.

My TRE spool came with a viscous eliminator.

It was alloy so I don't think it actually locked it.

I honestly cant recall.

Here is a pic,

I believe it was more to do with keeping the shaft from moving around (xfer case output shaft)

If you've welded the centre diff you don't need a vce.

You can refit the stock viscous unit to hold the ball bearing that keeps the transfer case output shaft in place. It won't DO anything because the centre diff is welded and immovable.

Alternatively, my gearbox was missing the ball bearing anyway, and a previous owner had put a rolled up piece of cardboard into the transfer case splines to prevent the shaft from sliding too far into the case - I replaced this with a piece of wooden dowel.

Push the shaft as far into the gearbox as it will go (away from the t-case), measure the bit that remains sticking out, measure the depth of the hole in the t-case and cut the dowel to makeup the difference between the two measurements.
The shape of the t-case output shaft will prevent it sliding further out of the t-case, and the dowel prevents it sliding too far into the t-case (which causes the oil seal where it enters the gearbox to leak).

Easy, and free.

That sounds about right, you'd want to get rid of the excess mass of the viscous, so instead of leaving it on there, just turn it down until you only have the splines and leave that on.

so essentially, i can just throw the welded centre in and leave the viscous in the box and it wont make a difference

Careful with the shims and the ball bearing Craig.
Still don't know why you want a welded centre for a track car though? It's going to suck on tight turns!

Why are you welding the centre diff?
The car will understeer like mad and will be a bitch to get it to turn into corners.
And how are you going to get around the transmission wind up cause of the locked diff?

My old familia had the facility to lock the transfer case, which did away with the centre diff and it was impossible to drive on dirt unless you had Ari Vatanen dna in you. And you risked major gearbox damage of you drove it on bitument that way.

My prado is also an understeering pig on dirt when you lock the centre diff.

There is just no good reason to do so in my book.

it helps the car off the line at the drags, not to mention takes that weak link out of the chain.

It's really not that bad to drive on the street, except when your trying to park, and I never had any transmission issues - not until I converted it to rwd anyway.

the only reason you would want to replace the centre diff with a welded one is to not worry about the pinion gears smashing on hard launches.

By the way GVR40, if you're hacking up your centre diff, want to sell the cross + pinions? Also I think I have a complete centre diff excluding cross+pinions if you want to swap+cash your way?

I suggest, if you plan to drive it around corners (slowly) then don't do it.

Spend a bit more coin and get an LSD or something like that.

Or go a 4 spider with an upgraded viscous.

you can always put a stock centre diff back in if you don't like it.

Best would be a Cusco tarmac centre diff (planetary diff giving a 40/60 front-rear distribution) - still utilises the stock viscous.

Yep I've done that (4spider centre diff conversion). Give me a holla if you need info on how-to.

And LOL at aftermarket centre diffs... have you ever got a price on one of them? worth 3/4 of the total value of the vr4!

lol... doing better than a cordia.. in that case they are worth more than the car.. hehe

yeh you really have to consider $$ vs actual performance gains.

It's like PPG boxes, shit I'd love to have one but they're $7k just for the parts. You have to be serious if you're forking out that much just for box components.
