What plugs does everyone use and why?

Im using BP6ES on my Evo. Ran best of 12.09 @ 115.87mph on 20psi using a 16g (gapped to 6mm running factory ignition). However i have fried an electrode during a recent drag meet so i think i will be stepping up to either 7s or 8 plugs.

Im looking into BK7ES.. what is everyone else using and what results?

Jon

Ohhhhhh nasty :? I would try the 7's and see how you go, not sure you'd need to step up to an 8 just yet. Also is there a reason you have chosen not to use a plug with a resistor?

Deffinition of a resistor plug for those of you who don't know what the [R] in the spark plug number stands for.

ive been told that the R series plugs dont have as good of a spark as the non R rated ones.. however im going to get my car put on a hub dyno which will pick up if there is any difference in the Rs and no Rs ill let you know :)

Jon

I have a feeling your 0.6mm (too close) gap probably caused the resistor fry. Grab a set of BPR6ES and gap them to 0.7 and see how you go.

That would be good as i'd like to know. I'd definatly go the 7's though.

However, the temperature at the insulator should not exceed 850? C, because at over 900? C glow ignition occurs. In addition, the electrodes are attacked or even destroyed at extremely high temperatures by chemical-aggressive combinations.

As i said ill take all suggestions and prove them on a hub dyno. Reason why we are using a hub dyno is that it will pick up minor improvements cos you dont spin rollers so there is no tolerance/loss of power etc.. Cost of plugs are like $10 a set.. ill send anyone who wnats to donate a set my address

In regards to using .6mm, im using them so that they dont blow out the spark. However i havent tried using .7mm gaps yet.. so that might be something interesting to see.

my car was missfiring at 1.1mm (the standard -11 plugs) top end
but improved greatly at .6mms...

this was on the 6's...
should have tried something colder

will give 7's and 8's a shot
been advised to go to a 10!!!... from mr rob barac himself...
bit too hardcore for me but he says it works for him..

my next step is to just upgrade the ignition system completly..

i was running 5's when i ran the car at calder... i ending up melting one after the vacuum hose blew off my map sensor.
i didn't actually know they were 5's, i hadnt taken them out since i had owned the car.
i changed them over for 7's, and the car ran a bit rough when cruising.
i've since changed to 6's with a 0.7-0.8mm gap and it runs beautifully!
i can't remember what model plugs they are, they're just the standard NGK plugs for a VR4.

i used some BP7ES last night..

went 12.09 @ 115.75mph with no problems..
car seems to drive like normal on 7s aswell!

highly recommended!

Jon

i think those are gapped to .9 standard on ngk

the 6's that are recommended on vr4's are gapped to 1.1mm
far too big...

i've dropped mine down to 6mm.. will try a little higher for the next ones..
7's seem to work nice on my car now also...

i found out 10's are the coldest you could go in an NGK
far too cold for now
maybe later down the track

MMMM i might give them a try... thanks for the tip... my work said they might be to big of a gap but with the new power i'll have prob the best idea... or do u think put the BP6ES n if they dont work go the the BP7ES...???

theres no reason for a 5k resistor in series with infinate resistance (open cct) to make a shread of difference to the plugs overall performance. I'll be interested to see ur results jon

im using b9's with the gap they come with, no problems with them.
running upwards of 2bar with no miss. stock coils and stock replacement leads.

How light is your car? How much power does it have?
Im really curious.. im about 6mph behind but almost 1.5 seconds!!!
I might try some 8s i think..

Jon

i've got some 7's and 8's.. gotta order the 9's and 10's...
will do some testing with them

also got the m&w pro14 on the way also with the m&w coils.... hopefully they are worth the money..

that much power on stock coils is very impressive!
good work!

factory gsr weight minus sound deadening and rear seats still has full exhaust etc.
it prob weighs more now with the cage in it.
418kw atw currently.
ran 10's with 385kw
car has run 129mph hopefully it should run in the high 130's when sorted.

Jon,
7 is the standard heat range for the Starion, not exactly radical :D
I am amazed you were running 6's very lucky you didn't damage the engine.
