well guys my wagon (4g93t) been blowing a little bit of smoke recently, and leaking a bit of oil out of the rocker cover so i pulled it off and resealed it, it was still leaking so i decided to do a comp test, the results wernt as i had hoped.

Cyl 1 was 150, 2 was 160, 3 was 145 and 4 was 90.

Im just after advice on what i should do, is it worth putting new rings in it or should i just go and buy a second hand motor and swap them over?

Good question ive wondered this myself..
I did one on mine and it came in at 150 across the board.

The thing is it could be a burnt valve or shitty valveseat giving you a bit of bad compression too..and that could also pressurise into the rocker cover compartment..maybe make it leak...all possibilities so automatically going for rings isnt always the answer..but is a fair call..how many K's has it done and how much oil do you get out when you drop it for an oil change?

And when you say smoke are you talking grey/blue blowBy?

Or fuel smoke..i get a bit of fuel and grey..the 4G's are pretty old and can be a pretty dirty motor as they get on..even with lowish K's..i think its also to do with the pollution gear/Factory Oil recirculation setup.
They love blowing shit out the back.

If you buy a second hand motor it could be as bad, or worse.....

If you can do the work yourself, it's probably worth fitting new rings and bearings, ditching the balance shafts and having a nice re-cond engine.

that's the option i'd pick anyway, obviously if you have to pay someone to do it, it's gonna cost abit more (tho, if you can remove the engine yourself, but leave the rebuild to a pro, it'll be much cheaper than a drive-in - drive-out job.

4g93t's dont have balance shafts, but everything squid mentioned just saved me posting.

buy mine :D wont give u 1 prob if u give it hell... n i'll do a really good price... but up to u...

i wouldnt rebuild yours man u will be up for heaps... if u think its the rings, then notice u have fucked pistons or something... then your up for more money... or u culd have a crack bore... who knows... its up to u really... or u could do what harry did man..

the motor has done around 135,xxx K's i and around 35 in my car, in the last 10-12 months. The oil leaks a bit from the rocker cover, out the bolt hole, its enough that i check it each time i fill up, and probably top it up every 2-3 tanks.

The smoke is Blue/grey now and then with a puff between gears when changing above 5k, and black/grey when under full load, different to the normal black that i was use to.

So is it worth taking to somwhere and getting them to have a good look at it?

also being a daily I'd like to keep it on the road as much as possible.

Azza ill have to have a chat to you about your motor...

Maybe back to where you bought it cv

Do you have oil coming from one of the head bolts where the low compression cylinders are? If so re-check the head torque? Do you find that the oil dipstick seems to be out a bit after a drive. It sounds to me like you have a compression leak into an oil jacket if thats the case. I had that happen to my 4g93.
