Hey guys...

Hope you don't mind me having a sook... well, too bad if you do hey!

I was out in my VR4 the other night with my biatch in the passenger seat and we were driving down the princes hwy on the way to her house.

She's quite enjoys me giving it a bit of stick, so I was in second gear and got the rev's up a bit and planted the boot.

You'd expect to get thrown back in the seat and for the car to take off, instead it stayed at the same speed and made lots of ugly noises.

After this... it hasn't made any boost past about 1-2psi and makes a wierd kind of induction noise, similar to what you'd hear if the compressor blades were broken.

Because it was late last night, I couldn't take it apart and do an inspection, but I took the intake off today and had a bit of a peek.

The compressor blades appear to be missing a little bit as if they've hit the housing, and there is about 2mm off back and forth play on the shaft.

I haven't had a chance to take the dump pipe off yet as I may need to drive the car to get places.

Here's a pic of the comp wheel...

What do you think? Rooted?

I'm assuming driving the car more will make the comp wheel hit the housing more and mess up the turbo even worse, but I'm assuming that the state it's in now, the wheel would need to be replaced anyway.

What would make the turbine wheel shit itself? Is it possible for something to break the turbine wheel and not the comp wheel?

Someone give me a hug, I feel like boo-hoo-ing

Cars are fucked

Mat

i would say you have had a bearing/shaft failure,i wouldnt drive it untill you take off the dump pipe and have a look at the exhaust wheel, thats probably what went first causing your compressor wheel to hit the housing.was everything else running fine leading up to this? any strange noises etc?

Those PTE turbo's are junk turbo's. I think if you rebuild it then it should be fine but just about everyone seems to have to rebuild within 10k kms

everything was running fine... no strange noises or anything.

really? who? i did a lot of reading up on the USA forums and never saw any bad reports on them.

youve done a thrust bearing..

i did the same thing to my SCM61 turbo.. it cost about $1250 to rebuild.. Kyp at ATP built it, and he screwed done the thrust bearing so it wouldntn happen again.

what causes this sort of problem is either:

a. lack of oil from the head (you should get the oil from the oil filter)
b. too might oil pressure

Jon

did you mean too much oil pressure?

did you ruin your wheels aswell? did they need to be replaced? was it included in the $1250 rebuild cost?

alot of them arnt balanced properly

Ah fuk Matt, you havent had that for long  . Where were you getting the oil feed from? the head or the oil pump? as mentioned earlier in regards to the oil, too little and the bearings heat up and suffer premature wear leading to shaft play then eventually collapsing  Either way, where did they instruct to get the oil feed from and did they recommend a restrictor? I always thought that the notches you see in the nuts that hold the wheels in place were from balancing?

i get the oil feed from the oil filter housing as instructed by PTE.
they don't recommend a restrictor unless you're running a ball-bearing turbo, which mine is not.

Very strange that it stuffed up with so little use. I'd go a step further and ask the company what oil pressure the turbo should have running through the cartridge?

I know its sucks balls. But damn I'm glad I didn't listen to you and buy one of these
I think warranty would be your best option. Would be a lot cheaper to pay for return freight than it would for a full rebuild.

Usually a rebuild is just bearing and seals and balance. If you need a new shaft or blades then it's usually extra. Those blades look badly grinded though.
Sorry to hear mate....Turbo's are fun hey

yep matt
get in contact with the company ASAP!
demand a rebuild
tell them u did everything properly
tell em you did the oil feed from the housing.. but dont tell them its from the unfiltered side... could that have been the issue????

anyway, good luck mate!

i wouldn't have thought so...

pete from rank reckons it wouldn't have made a difference.

also... it happened just 2 days after i changed the oil, so it wouldn't have been because of impurities/shit oil

i'm going to call them in the morning. wish me luck!

Just spoke to Extreme PSI... I have to ship the turbo back to them and the will send it to PTE who will inspect it and probably rebuild it.

Apparently they are very good at honoring warranties during the first 12 months... this could be good or bad... how many turbos do they get back???
