after several engine swaps with my car, and and several other galants, i have started to notice that the heads are not all the same as we all suspected....

as far as i can tell after the amount of engine heads that have gone through my possession is this....

the N/A head has a 2.0 and a 3 below it..

the turbo head has also the 2.0 but a 12 below it..

part numbers may have changed between HH/HG series.
Tolerances valve sizes etc, are all the same, parts are interchangeable.... the only difference is this....

IMAG0498.jpg

left: is from the Turbo head
right: is from the N/A head

the N/A head has a 2nd oil pressure regulator before the oil hits the galleries, the turbo head has direct pressure to all galleries and turbo....

just thought i would share, so if your using an N/A head on a turbo car, i might suggest changing that little part over.. not quite sure what the pressure is set too... probably around the 30psi marker....

Thats some good info there Jay. :)
I just chucked an NA head on my turbo engine without knowing this. Thanks. :)

sharing is caring

although i might have just fluked some cyl heads that seemed to have matched my theory....

would anyone else like to confirm? would be great to get info with guys running the Hyundai heads....

i asked before if i could use a non turbo head on my vr4 and they said it could not be done

Good find Jay!!

Are the heads physically different where that oil distribution block sits?

Does the turbo head have a hole big enough for that N/A bit to go in?

yer there identical Baz, you can swap them around at will... bolt holes and all... even have a completely useless hole that is drilled out on both heads..

maybe thats why i kept blowing turbos on my turbo ggsr, cos i had an n/a head?

that is a probability as the spring wasn't as stiff compared to the spring on the oil pump...

^^ Could well be. Were they running dry?

wouldn't be completely dry, just maybe under sudden throttle not enough oil to the cartridge... although if you were running a BB turbo, i dont think it wouldnt be a bad thing.....

My 2.0L Hyundai Sonata (4G63) head reads "Y3" and "4".
My 1.6L Hyundai Lantra (4G61) head just reads "1.6L".
