Hi guy's, I am having an hesitation whilst accelerating at fairly low speeds. I thought it was the spark plugs so i replaced them and tested the leads which turned out to be ok! I also have a lifter problem which i am going to get fixed but i dont think that this would contribute to the problem. would it??? Any advice of what it could be (common probs) or what to do next would be much appreciated as i am new to the vr4 scene.
Thanks! :?

I was about to say change sparkies and leads but you've alreaady done that, so the only other thing I can think of is, it's time to change the fuel filter or maybe you got a bad batch of fuel.

Aspec or Jspec? What year?

First step would be to replace plugs and GAP THEM.

Use either a 6 or 7 range plug, 7's seem to be the choice. Don't use Iridium or Platinum plugs. The correct gap is 0.7-0.8mm, I tend to go closer rather than farther.

If this doesn't fix, I am goign to assume that you're suffering from phantom knock due to your lifter issue. Get a datalogger out.

Hi, thanks for the help i will look into that and possibly get some new plug leads tonight, the spark plugs i put in were smaller than the ones allready in there but i was asured that they were the right ones by a parts manager at my dads work (maybe not). will post a reply later after i have changed the plugs or takin it out for another drive so i can accurately tell you the details of the prob and its a 1990 aus spec.
Thanks again!

Hi, yea i replaced them with a set of denso k20pr-u's but i will get the Bpr7es like you said as i did notice a size difference. This i dont think will fix the problem though as the new spark plugs (similar to bpr6es) i had fitted didnt help at all. As for the details of the hesitation it only occurs when i accelerate fairly decent and it go's right up to about 80% of acceleration (on and off boost so not turbo). It still go's moderatly well but it is still very noticible and is definately pulling up short of what it should! I got told today that it may be a problem with the coil. is this a possibility? What should i try next, my dad and i are really stoked on this one so any info on what to try next would be awsome

I appreciate all the help i have been getting from this site and like i said i am new to this. I bought my vr4 as a driving project from a bloke who had the engine fitted with new seals, rings etc. by a dodgy mechanic who soon closed his business  (obveiously done in a hurry) So my dad (used to be a technision when he was young) and i have to go over this dudes shity work! fun lol.

In all seriousness...

buy the datalogger in the for sale section for 100 bucks or whatever it is...

plug it in and check your knock count.

Sounds like MASSIVE case of phantom knock.

cool, i will do that you obviously know what your talking about. thanks for that. Will this go away say if it is a knock prob if i replace the hydrolic lifters or is there much more like valves and that? lol or i guess i will have to wait and find out :? i have about 3k left to spend on my car so hopefully its not going to be anythin major as i really wana starts saving for some future mods :D to beat some other cars in my group of mates (madvr4, madevo etc.) mind you i dont like my chances with madevo/alex's big arss to4 in his evo  anyways thats a long way away!
Cheers

hey mate,

have a look in http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html then go into the engine section, then find the one that is for 'Magnecor Spark plug wire info'.

the symptoms you are describing sound similar to what i was having problems with, and it turned out my leads where stuffed, there was a hole that the spark could arc out on in one cylinder.

have a look at the photo and then check your leads and compare.

Regards,

Ben

had the same problem with my car 6months back. replaced the leads which actually looked quite good and tested fine with altimetre to some new ones and made a world of difference.

If it's phantom knock you'll need a new knock sensor which is approx 180 bucks.

You'll also want to replace those lifters somewhere down the track. Full set of 3g lifters you can pickup from meek, afas or even jon I think. I might even have a set at home somewhere but i'm overseas atm.

Replace the leads with something useful... I ran NGK leads which worked fine for me, just get 8.8mm or thicker for the extra insulation. Magnecores are great but you're looking at 300-400 bucks for a set of them from memory.

Hi, guys just letting you know that my dads fixed the hesitation prob.
It was the timing/angle sensor thingy :D on the left of the
rear cam shaft. We just adjusted it and something else my
dad adjusted lol and it was running ace! scared my dad
even more the power i will be driving with :) he was joking
about restricting the boost! (hope he was lol) Anyways im
thinking about borrowing a dataloger from a mate and just
checking it out making sure everything is runnin smooth and getting some decent leads prehaps aswell.
Thanks for the help.
Jamie.

Yea runs awsome no prob accelerating now :D , y
ea it was a good buy but still need to put $$$ into it suspension etc.
