hey guys,

tonight I had a pretty scary experience in the VR4, Lorry happened to be in the passenger seat at the time aswell.

I was driving to Ballarat for a job meeting and about 1 hour into the trip I got a sudden jolt, similar to a fuel cut but I thought nothing of it and put it down to a problem with the cruise control disengaging or something similar. Soon after I noticed some grey smoke behind the car and paniced thinking the turbo was doing something it shouldn't have been.

I pulled in at the nearest service station and popped the bonnet. I noticed some smoke and a burning smell but couldn't see where it was coming from. The oil looked fine, there was plenty of coolant and couldn't see any leaks so I took the car for a quick test drive around the servo and everything seemed to be fine, the car drove ok and no more smoke.

We hopped back in it and drove another 30km to Ballarat sitting on about 110km/h.

After the meeting I hopped back in the car and was cruising at about 40-50km/h when the car made a loud "bang" and violently spun to the left and slid sideways across 3 lanes towards a row of cars parked perpendicular to the kerb! Luckily it missed by a matter of feet.

I'm just so glad that it didn't happen when mum and I were on the freeway doing 110km/h... god knows what the outcome could have been then!!!! :?

Baz, I'm glad we changed those tyres yesterday mate, with the bald ones I would have had no hope!

Lorry, thanks for all your help tonight, you're a true mate and a very valuable member of the car club. I'm very appreciative! Sorry for the scare, but I thought you were looking a bit sleepy and needed a wakeup :p

Moral of the story - use the KISS principal (keep it simple stupid)
AWD cars with EFI and turbos are gay, things just fuck up!
I want my RWD carby fed n/a rotor back!

Mat

PS. we still don't know the cause of this... possibly a seized transfer case? the car is still at Ballarat and will be getting fixed up this week hopefully.

Good news is that ben (the mechanic) is tearing the car apart already (he started 40 minutes ago) so I should have a phone call very soon.

Better news is that I have every part your car could possibly need in terms of driveline bits so it'll be fixed without downtime!

Bad new is that it happened :/

Don't worry mate, she'll be good to go when you get her back. Don't do anything stupid like sell her.

Wow that must have been scary! glad you are both ok!

I have heard something similar happen to a Mazda 323 Familia GTr, down the freeway here in Perth at 100km/h. All of a sudden a loud bang, car spun sideways and into a barrier and spun a few times, luckily no one else was involved.

Car was a rally car so had a cage etc, but both ends were in rather average shape.

I think it came down to a blown transfer case, which from what I hear is a pretty common problem with Familia and TX3 lasers.

Never heard of that in a Mitsubishi though. Although a mates GSR blew the rear seal on his transfer on the highway causing it to make all sorts of scary sounds. New Seal and then fresh oil he said you couldn't tell the difference :D

I always worried about that happening in my VR4. Dunno why.. I guess because the Americans all had their Transfer Case Recall done - and I had nfi if mine was done in Japan. Glad to hear no-one was hurt. :D

Its a very common problem with vr4's, especially the A Spec ones and the US delivered ones, due to the yoke on the drive shaft letting the oil leak out.

It should be a weekly check to stick your head under neath to check for oil leaks around that area.

I'm not too sure sorry Matt.

Thats what I thought - quite concerning....

just got off the phone to mitsubishi in my area...

they said that there hasn't been a recall and that "yes, it is dangerous" :?

Mat's car's going to be fixed tomorrow/wed.

It lunched the rear diff.

Badly.

The crown wheel has no teeth and the teeth are lodged in various other parts of hte differential. The casing twisted.

May also need a tailshaft!

Dear god you're lucky I have all these parts in my shed boy. :p
