I always worried about that happening in my VR4. Dunno why.. I guess because the Americans all had their Transfer Case Recall done - and I had nfi if mine was done in Japan. Glad to hear no-one was hurt. :D

That makes me feel great!
Good to hear no smashed panels and lost lives, theres a lot of that lately. Luckily Lorrie has enough spares to build 5 galants.

print that transfer case document out and give it to the mitsu guys in aus..

aus specs and us specs are pretty much the same... so they should honour it!

but then does this mean all gvr4's need to be recalled?
maybe not enough vr4's were sold here to be an issue?

i know for a fact, all aus specs i have worked on have xfer case leaks!

I've been on the phone to the Mistubishi quality control and technical service manager... they want to get the car to a Mitsubishi deal ASAP to check it out.

They're looking into the recall.

with the recall

my C73A Transfer case had water in it but I changed it for the vr4 one from the cut i bought

its just bad gaskets or rubber seal

Was the car not making noise to shown signs of diff wear before it blew?

Any noises at all?

I change my gearbox, difff and transfer case oil every six months ..and check it for leaks almost daily...its an issue that i hope never occurs..which is why i posted this...

In which you posted this....

i get something similar to this...

it only started happening after my new clutch/flywheel went in

what clutch/flywheel combo are you running?

Could they be related?

Damn your lucky with that ..thank god you werent on the highway!

It's just one of those things.. I just make sure the Transfer Case was always topped up (and kept an eye on it to make sure it wasn't leaking everywhere).

I'm with Jap63, surely you'd expect some kind of noise/whine/grinding/heat etc coming from the drivetrain before total siezure? I had a rear diff sieze on me once many years ago because I chose to ignore the whining noise and fluid leakage out of my rear wheel bearings (had deep dish overtrack wheels causing strain on the wheel bearings, looked good and gripped well but killed bearings every few months  ), so I turned the music up and thought that 'id fix it one day'... yeah it fixed it alright, total siezure at night in the rain doing 80kmh and luckily I managed to control the car sideways around a bend and stick to the middle of 2 lanes instead of losing it into a concrete jersy kerb  It was an instant BANG and lockup!!! I put my hand up for that one as my own fault and negligence due to the fact of being too poor at the time to fix it

are they in any way related?
Do you mean like a a solid axle rear end?

Im wondering if the noise i have is heading down the same path as matress...other members have had the noise for years and years though.

well the noise i got started almost instantly after the clutch and flywheel went in... i looked around on forums and people put it down to driveline chatter due to there not being a dampener on the clutch plate.

it did sound like the backlash was set incorrectly on the diff though but I put up with it thinking it was ok.

would it be worth welding the rear diff? would this put too much strain on the 3-bolt axels?

i used to get my rx7 diff's welded up because they kept breaking... it seemed safer than having the diff seize up in the event of a breakage

I might get my open 3bolt diff welded, once the LSD goes in, NO one will want it anyway

My guess is with these cars if you welded a diff up you'd surely break and or twist a 3 bolt shaft

As i said im only guessing..id love to see it in practice and see if it would hold up..think youd be pusing it though...they seem to break often on standard cars..so welding it solid surely couldnt help.

This happened to me on saturday on the way to compak attak at wsid. Luckily i got mine off the road before it locked up.
really? what was it? diff lock up or transfer?

bearing in the transfer locked up. Just started making a hell of a noise and no sooner had i pulled over and she went bang. "I'M NOT MOVING ANYWHERE". One towtruck ride later and she is back on the road

hey, this is a pretty scary thing to leave unchecked so if someone can give a detailed step by step on checking the transfer case and the diff etc with things to look out for that would be great!
Good to here no one was hurt, just makes you think is it worth it?
Thanks!
Jamie.

This has been going through my mind every day since it happened and is the reason why I'm considering selling it
