Yo,
I'm thinking about a new EBC for my vr4 and I've noticed they have a VERY wide price range.

Just after general advice on choosing one. What do you use? Why? Pro's/con's?

Cheers
Chris

I use an Apexi AVC-R alot i know alot of people that use them mine seems to work well and the parts that came with it are great quality.

A nice basic EBC is the AEM TRU BOOST, i just installed 1 in my mates GSR and its awesome, easy to adjust plus doesnt burn a big hole in your wallet

I use ECMlink and $500 is about as much as I'd like to spend

Greddys Profec's and E-boost street look like what I want
True boost seems too basic and the AVC-R has features I probably won't need

I've been looking around at them for an hour and a half and still don't have a clue what to go for
:/

i dont have this jaycar one, but i think it sounds like the goods, i had a smart turbo timer from jaycar, it was great.

i was looking at this jaycar one, but won a hks one on ebay.

I'm sure the eboost street is only just over $300, back when they first came out I think I bought my old one for just over $400.
Easy to use and holds boost well!

I'm looking to get a new controller also. Looking towards HDi "SBC-D" for about 150-200 it seems to be. After learning about open/closed loop control systems at uni, EBCs are heeeeeaps better than MBCs.

I actually made one of those jaycar EBC's back in high school. Wasn't bad, could be a bit tricky to adjust properly though. Also, you have to make sure you get a decent solenoid for it. The first solenoid I used I got from the wreckers, factory silvia solenoid I think..... didn't work too well

I've used a few greddy controllers a few years ago, from memory I was not a fan lol.

the last EBC i bought was actually one of these on ebay (although it was a bit cheaper when I bought it)

I was pleasently suprised with it, worked really well! Simple to set up and use too :D

I agree with what was said above, if you already have ecmlink, get the boost control package. If you look at a lot of boost controllers on the market they use the same or similar 3 port solenoids as the one ecmlink are using, so its all in how its controlled. Even look on the net for replacement solenoids for a few of the popular brands they appear to be similar blue colored 3 port solenoid with a different sticker.

Why buy a separate unit when you can do it with your current software, or if you have only the lite version spend the money on going to the full version and the boost control package. Upgrade form lite to full version is 125 and the solenoid they use is 39 plus probably the same in postage. So your probably looking at around the 200 mark.

Then as a bonus you have some cash to spend on more go fast parts.

I been in a car with one of those HDi SBC-D controller and the boost control was crap. The have only one setting of switch it off to run stock gate pressure.
If you getting one of those for 150-200 you may as well get a decent manual controller like a turbotech one.

DAMMIT!!!! I thought HDi was decent/good!!!

I've run a turbotech bleed valve on my cordia, tried to shut it to lowest setting because sick of boost spiking... and didn't really work... still went over 20psi... I wanna get a good EBC!!!!! ...i have an eboost from my other galant, which is now run off the ecu... but they used the solenoid to hook that up, so I need bits to get that working... at least a solenoid

Turbosmart are tried and tested, I have never heard of anyone having problems with them? Yes I agree try the one with ecmlink however you usually get what you pay for and turbosmart are reasonably priced these days

A solenoid just cycles as its told to. The "quality" in how stable you boost is comes from the electronics controlling it. Do a search of the solenoids used in eboost, aem, gizzmo, titan. They all look the same.

If he has ecmlink i say do some reading on the forums and see how well its working for people so far. You can also use different boost in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear onwards.
I stopped reading up on it a little while ago but it sounded promising when i was reading up on it. But judging on the rest of the functionality of ecmlink its worth looking into. I wouldn't say its bad quality because the solenoid used is $39 if it wasn't suitable they would use something else, they also give the specs of solenoids you can also use, if you want to use another solenoid.

If its on the lowest setting and you getting too much boost you have other problems, Just test it by running a line strait from your pressure source on you pipes to the actuator, that essentially the same thing. If it cant run gate pressure you need to search on here for the discussions on boost creep. My turbotech controller ran reasonably well. Running 22psi it'd get 2psi spikes, but it wasn't erratic, just a spike if you dropped down a gear flat stick. Maybe if i had a better flowing wastegate this might not happen either.

+1 for milky, i think it lets you run diferent boost in each gear even, i was spewing it not available for the evo platform.
would have to be the best way to spend the $150 ish needed.
plus you get all the other upgrade stuff to use later as well (in my link above)
