Oh well, if you don't laugh you cry, so....
Something tells me these two parts should not come in contact? When someone guesses what the two parts are, you get the rest of the pics :p

Those who Ive already know what it is no guessing!

Starter motor yes, now think more destruction, also its not a tool.
The other part really should not have hit the starter motor!

starter and gudgeon pin

ive done that too
Yep. Must have had some force behind it as the rest of the starter motor is still bolted to the gearbox.
Guess ill get more more pics when i pull the motor out when i have more time in a few weeks.

Just opened a can of worms with this one, i have another motor but its done some decent km's so it would need a freshen up before i push it anyway, so look like ill be going down the path of a forged build.

Is that you build stroker motor what went?

It was pretty intense how it happened, i was somewhere around 7K revs, i herd a rattling sound and instantly thought, another gearbox, surely i haven't blown 2nd or 3rd gear that i was in, i need more power to strip those gears, I've blow first before and selector forks.

Then a second later i see a flame out the back window followed by a smoke trail and sparks, engine dies as its still running for a bit as i go to turn it off and i limp it into a side street.

Thinking oh no, i see smoke coming form under to bonnet, i search like crazy for my fire extinguisher grab it then hand shaking so much trying to pull the pin out, I'm about to pop the bonnet and remember how watching many race cars on fire on the tv the guys go to lift the bonnet cop a face full of flames, so i pop it anyway, no flames. Wheres the fire? I'm thinking you are NOT gonna burn car!

At this point a taxi pull over as I'm looking for the fire and i say if this goes up call the fire brigade, i look underneath and its just some oil burning on the exhaust, its lost its guts everywhere, but the fire was actually pretty small, i get it out pretty quick, pretty sure it did little extra damage.
I tell the taxi done worry but he must have already called and the fire brigade rocks up a few minutes later, has a look and puts some saw dust on about 5l of oil and coolant all over the road. It left a nice 500m trail up the road before i pulled over to. I went looking for engine shrapnel but couldn't find any on the road where it first went.

Pretty full on watching you car catch fire, most intense adrenalin rush i ever had, i just keep thinking of the hours in the garage, i was like you better not burn! Pretty sure the oil fire on the exhaust only lasted a few seconds so it didn't look like it burn anything more than a hot exhaust in that area would normally.

You guys and your light weight blocks....

Good effort there!

Was it knock or was it something else?
I got my knock CEL on my dash set at 2*, i didn't see it come up, i do notice it if it comes up and then i go have a re tune if i need to.
The tune was actually pretty mild at this point, i had softened it up as a few cold nights it was either sucking more airflow or i got some stale fuel as i saw the knock light come up now and then so i softened the tune up.

I'm thinking it possible balance shaft bearing maybe went and seized and took everything out.
Or possibly a rod bolt let go.

I don't see why it would have knocked so hard all of a sudden unless something fueling related failed. Spark plug are not melted, and if there was enough heat to melt a piston so bad id expect the plug to be shot, they ll look like they were a nice bronze colour before being covered in oil. The cylinder that went the gap on the plug is squashed as something, probably piston parts had hit it.

Don't worry ill put some pics up when i pull it apart, bit busy atm. Will be interesting to see what can be learned before putting the next motor in in case it was something else failing other than the motor.
It had plenty of oil, water and tune was good, i checked all those about a week before, knock sensor was responding to my tuning when i touched the tune up after it started knocking around 1-2 degree's, i think it was just some cold night it sucking more air or bad fuel so i backed the tune off a bit. So it wasn't as highly strung as id had it when this happened.

hey mate I know of a couple of sets of forged pistons kicking around perth that could be cheapish. 400 was the bottom line on one set with rings. He is just down the road from me...I can text you the number if you want it.

Bugger that it is a six bolt....I have lots of 7 bolt bits here

I wont know until i putt it down, I don't think it was due to heat or detonation, considering the spark plug on the failed cylinder isn't melted, it isn't white from heat, its still a nice bronze colour like the rest of the cylinders, they are just now all covered in fresh oil. Looking at the head and pistons will tell later on though.

So something like balance shaft bearings, or rod bolts maybe.

Either way ill pull it down later, I'm sure there will be some interesting pics, and everyone loves engine destruction pics!

Thanks for the offer Brian, I Almost already made my mind up on the piston-rod combination. I was meaning to call today, i think its time for a beer!
