the engine is a monster!
take it somewhere, save you the headache!

how heavy is the motor by itself?

Not sure. Something around the 500kg mark.

Not overly fussed, that's what engine cranes are for. I'm not paying some bastard to remove/refit it though... and M&W here in ballarat WILL NOT remove/refit engines. They will onyl work on your engine if yousupply just that... the engine.

Pull it out, take it to them, and tell them to fix it :D The refit yourself

Mate I'm not clued up on those engines but in general diesels are made pretty heavy duty and last a shit load longer than our 4 cylinder forced fed engines so there's a damn good chance the crank, rods and pistons are still good (unless these engines are notoriously harsh on the crank as Dougmo suggested). I reckon pull it down and compare tolerances as per factory spec and if its a stock engine using the stock soft rings, and the bore still looks good and within spec, then all it would need is a hone and fit new rings and bearings (and crank if necessary) and be done with it - you can do that at home. But if its not within spec you will have to get it bored out for oversize pistons etc. I reckon you should just do all the hard work by removing the motor and delivering the block, crank, rods and pistons to an engineering/machine shop and get them to check it for you and whether they say yay or nay will determine how much $$ you'll be spending.

Ok...

well, i'll yank the engine as soon as I put this vr4 on the road and take it to M&W. Get it checked over and see what they say.

The toyota's are NOTORIOUS for lasting past 600-800 THOUSAND km's. There are guys in the US running 1hz's that have 700,000 MILES on a stock engine that's never been opened.

Hopefully new rings, bearings and a hone will clean it up and i'll get away for 2 grand total. Or maybe less. I don't have the skills to do it in my shed, or the equipment really.

Mate $2000 is far too much. If you're installing the engine back in yourself the tests, hone, new rings and new bearings you should be getting change back from $1000 easy I reckon :)

asdf.

Son of a bitch.

I have a quote here from my diesel mechanic for 8400 dollars for a complete remove, refit and rebuild. Incl the diesel injector pump (2000 dollars for that alone).

Fuck me sideways.

Time for the 6.4ltr V8 diesel (Twin turbo maybe)? Can get a import motor for that ;)
