FWD Transmission Tunnels

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Two reasons...

the most obvious one is the exhaust travels down it negating chances from damage from underbody obstacles.

The less obvious one is chassis flex in an accident. It redistributes the sudden load of an accident much more cleanly than a ladder frame or solid flat floorplan and thus is safer. It would be next to impossible for me to explain this in text without diagrams.

perhaps to run the aircon and electrics??

That stuff runs inside the car.

He's talking about the semi circle moulded into the floorpan when you look at the car from underneath. Most FWD's have the exhaust running down it.

From the pics on that site it doesnt show a shot of underneath, so to create a lower floor, you run the electrics and airconditioning through the middle of the car???

From what I can see of new car designs, they jack up the seats and put two layers of carpet in the floor, doubles as extra sound deadening to reduce the all important NVH levels. (Noise-Vibration-Harshness)

The camry's especially are guilty of this, the doors are FREAKING HUGE and the seats are high up.

I think its great. Below are some shots of the echo rally car we are building. We can hide the exhaust up nice and high away from logs that might try to rip it off (Fuel and brake lines will be run mostly inside the car anyway so they are not an issue).

As Entaran said, check out the strength gained with the bracing across the floor to which the seats bolt to.

 I forgot to tell you about the exhaust last night before you logged off msn Cade :p I was rudely interupted and connection was lost

Any hoo some really good technical answers there.....

Did anyone considered that almost every jap FWD car has the option of factory AWD.

Not only am I going to call bullshit on this, i'm going to point out that you haven't got a god damned clue what the hell you're on about with a comment like that.

There are -SOME- (RARE) cars that have factory AWD options. There are -SOME- cars that are FWD as well as AWD, but by and large this has nothing at all to do with the tunnel. Infact if it was designed for a driveshaft to run down it it would not only have a larger circumference in the semi circle, it would have areas where you can mount the carrier bearings and the like. And don't point to a lancer as a proof of your theory. Most lancers upto the current model were built on the same floorpan as the evo (4 door variants).

Also case in point, even shit like Astra's and Vectra's have centre tunnels, as well as camry's and FWD VW's, Audi's so on. The reasons are outlined above.

Speaking of which as a bit of trivia, did you boys know that the CC coupe was available as factory AWD in Japan, America, Canada and New Zealand... and it come in a 4 door version as well called the Mirage Asti! The little CC Cyborg hatches (Proton Satrias) were offered in FWD or AWD as well. Thats why we can convert them to AWD relatively easy  They also came in a freakin diesel!! Sometimes we dont know what's offered outside of Australia in drivetrains because we never see nor hear about it  Take the new 2007 model Ford Transit for example, they are offered with the option of front wheel drive or rear wheel drive

Calibra, Astra, Vectra, Golf all come with a tailshaft down the centre. (just because you haven't seen one, doesn't mean they don't exist.)
AWD 626
AWD Charade
AWD Cordia
AWD Swift
AWD Nimbus
AWD Corolla
AWD Pintara

I could list every variation of every Japanese model if I could be bothered.
I know all the chassis, engine, gearbox and differential codes and I am very familiar with all of the components.
You can do the AWD conversion using the import parts for almost every FWD car sold in Aus.
I would know, I can supply the parts for all of them (this is what I have been doing for a job since the early days of Jap imports.)

ps. you can disagree with me on certain things, but if you don't have to be rude to me in front of my peers here.
How about an apology?

Chill out dude ( you know what I am talking about)

Right or wrong... rudeness like this is just not called for.

I like to believe that I have 'got a god damned clue what the hell I'm on about ', since I can come up with parts for these things and I can competenly repair all these complicated assemblies including some of the likes, that you have never seen and couldn't possibly imagine.
It's all in a day's work for me.
Would you believe that I have worked on
AWD Porsche
AWD Lamborghini
AWD VW Transporter
4WD Torago

Shit man, if you want to know anything about the different model variations in the rest of the world, I can tell you quite a bit. I have even worked on a factry 4WD Falcon. Did you know that they made HZ Holdens with mazda rotory engines? VR-VS Commodores got sent overeseas with 4cyl engines. I used to do 6WD conversions for Army Landrovers using factory parts. Detomaso Mangustas used a Ford Escort engine with a VW Beetle gearbox. Ford Sierras also come in AWD. Lotus Elise uses the same series of gearbox as Freelander. Lotus Elan uses a Gemini engine.
Kia now use the 4G63 engine.

This is all just off the top of my head, it's going to take you years to prove that I am wrong.
Anything else that you want to know about cars?
