Get the tape measure out! EVO I-III & GSR Wheel Track discussion

Yep, thats what I'm thinking Craig. Now all we need is someone with an E2/3 lower control arm to compare it to a GSR/E1 lower control arm. Or If I can grab one I'll give it a good suss out.

We shouldnt only be comparing overal length to see if that determines the extra track, but I'm also interested to see them laid side by side tip to tip on the ground to see if there is a change of angle as well on the ball joint end of the arm. Like when I discovered my E1 lower arms were bent as per the previous page in this thread with pics. The slight angle change at the ball joint end made a massive extra track difference!

i did that last time we had this discussion when i was adament that it was in the arms. thats when i got one of my evo 2 arms and an evo 1 arm and sat them side by side. they are the same width as each other but evo 2 arms have more castor.

No difference in angle either George?
Hmmm... interesting... then that only leaves the hubs. - and there is a difference!
GSR/EVO1 have a hub with the number 14 cast into them... EVO II/III have a hub with no markings whatsoever.
I tell you what, one day I'm gonna find out for sure what it is for myself just to put this to rest lol :w00t:

you right with the crossmember, my mate bought an "evo2 crossmember" and it turned out to be a jap spec gsr one.

lots of people assuming they are the same and just saying "evo3" etc... I reckon.

Measured the Gsr kframe, I think it may be bent if anything, it measured 760mm centre to centre, and 930mm at the top, I couldn't fit the cusco underbrace too it, but could to the evo one. Weird ?

Not the hubs either Rob, Paul is using EVO2 K frame and EVO2 control arms but using Proton hubs and he has the extra track on his

We sure its got nothing to do with the control arms?

your they guys that told me it was the crossmember which made me check the arms in the first place.

it has to be in the crossmember, the arms(that i have checked) are definatley the same width but more castor on the 2/3 arm over the 1/gsr style.

also alot of the under body braces have slotted holes to suit both width crossmembers which are conveniently approx 8mm to suit the extra 15mm of track.

and lastly didnt liberoz measure two crossmembers to confirm?

Yeah I seem to recall Liberoz said something about under body braces having holes or slots to suit both widths for the Evo. He also said it was the K-frame that made the difference.

But 2much just measured his E2 kframe and its the same 750mm as an E1/GSR (unless 2much's K-frame is not an E2?? - His GSR kframe appears to have the extra 10mm at 760mm!!! Maybe 2much has his kframes mixed up? lol). If you can still measure your EVO 2 k-frame George and I'll measure Frankie's E2 K-frame in the next few days we'll get a better idea with 3 measurments to compare. I know Frankie's is a genuine E2 front end because I did the conversion from an E2 frontcut!! lol :)

yep ill measure mine when i get a chance. Ill have to make some stands to point up to the bolt centres so i can get an accurate measurement
from centre to centre. i tried by eye the other night with no luck

K frame from my Evo II halfcut is definately 760mm.

weird,
the one that i just took out of the gsr was 760,
the one i took out of my e2 was 750,

i'm not sure if the knuckles are different, but i used the steering rack from the gsr into the evo kframe, and i needed to adjust the tierod ends, as the evo lower control arms were further apart,

maybe the gsr had an evo kframe, and perhaps the evo had had a replacement gsr kframe at some point in it's history...

i'm past that now, so onto getting on the road now.

Thanks for the pic Paul :)

So far:
EVO II K-frame = 750mm (2much)
EVO II K-frame = 760mm (Paul)
EVO II K-frame = ???mm (Dougmo)
EVO II K-frame = ???mm (Frankie)

That'll sort it out.

i think how accurate some of the measurements are taken may affect the results by a few mm.

Ill post my measurement when I can check it 100% properly

Actually rob measure both of the K frames that are at Frank-e's place.... coz i dunno what my 1 is from... GSR or the EVO 2 halfcut that the guy bought to throw the engine into the GSR
