Im looking for a GPS for my dad's bday soon.

Anyone have any ideas?

Im looking at ...

TomTom One XL
Navman S50
Mio C520

Atm, im leaning more towards the TomTom as you can have different voices, but the Mio seems to have more functions + you can search for businesses, whilst the Navman is new and its map's look clean/easy to use. Thoughts?

ive used quite a few different ones.. tom tom are always pretty good quality..

you should check out the garmin range, not a bad unit...

navman and mio i don't think are in the same range as tom tom and garmin though..

but it depends on what suits you more personally

i've always used tomtom and they are great.
they are larger than most, and not as flexible / portable.. but it is an easy unit to use...

I've had a tom tom one for about 6 months. Loves in the work truck and it's great. I've heard to stay away from navman but another bloke has one at work and he's had no problems.

I've heard from most people that tom tom is the way to go, hence why i got one.

If you're interested, the WRX club are talking about a group buy on
tomtoms at the moment.

not finalised but I can keep you up to date if you like

which tomtom model is the best one? Ive been looking at getting one for a while now, but cant decide which tomtom model to get ...

Well the next model up (GO 720) actually says the street names and has a few extra (play music through fm transmitter), but not sure if its worth the extra $$$ from the One XL.

The Mio can save phone numbers/names into itself, speaks street names & you can actually search for businesses (Eg, Kmart) and it shows them & their ph numbers.... apparently. So yea decisions :S

When I used to work a long way from where I live, my manager would pick me up in the morning, and we basically tried out every GPS we had in stock (we were soooooooo bored haha)

Anyway, the tomtom was the best, it tells you to change lanes etc. The ones we tried which ran navigator (mio, voxtrack etc) told us to turn left in the middle of an intersection.... alright if you know that it's wrong but if you had never hit that intersection before.. not good.

Edit: Oh yeah, the tom tom had the highest quality LCD too, the hitachi we tried looked the best in the shop, and the tom tom the worst, but in the car the tomtom was the only one you could read if there was a big of glare on the screen.

My bro uses a Tom Tom.... its a good machine and the MRS was gonna buy me one for Fathers Day UNTIL our mobile phone plan was almost up so we each got a new Nokia 6110 Navigator mobile phone with inbuilt SATNAV GPS system so I dont need a separate GPS unit for the car :D The mobile sits in the cradle and works the same and for the cost of the phone versus a standalone GPS unit we went the phone!! The novelty of a GPS wears off quick so the mobile phone/GPS in one is awesome!!!

i sell these things, and have found that the tomtom is much easier to use than the navman, it also has all the same features, including blue tooth.

ive personally used the tom tom 910, i dont think they sell these anymore, but there were the bomb b!! read out ur messages via bluetooth as well... and internal hard drive for music and photos or what not..

tom tom is just option packed...

but if u decide not to go for tom tom, definately garmin is next in line...

Yeah the 910 is the one we tried, we tested out the dial through bluetooth function, it works if the mobile is outside the car in a bag :D Speaker is loud for speakerphone too.

I spoke to JB HiFi at Eastland in Ringwood - lass named Jade there says
that for an order of 10 she can do the XL for $415. That's compared to
their already sale price of $447. She has written it on a card for me and
says there's no problems with us all rocking up and paying separately or
anything like that. It sounds good to me.

So who's in?

GVR40, can you do us better????

if you go to your local super cheap auto, and tell them that price then they should beat it, by the time i have shipped it down to you guys it wouldn't be worth the extra bit or saving.

tom tom maps are good to use, same as Troy I have it on my phone

and I have a Garmin at work with whereis maps, its easy to use but not as good or precise as my phone

Ive used a Navman 510 which was good also

but if you get the new tom tom maps, it tells you what speed each road is etc and you can also add speed cameras, fixed and mobile + school zones

I have a navman 510. Its ok, but has sent me on a few wild goose chases.
Have also used a garmin. seemed better, quicker to calculate and more accurate countdown to corners.

The navman makes some late calls, if it were your co-driver you'd crash for sure.

From the sound of it, tomtom will be my next one.

C'mon guys, noone interested in these ???

Im still interested. I know DSE nunawading had them on special for $425 on the ONE XL. I think there was a new ONE XL coming out with spoken street names so proberly trying to get rid of them.

I also have a friend who can get the Navmans at a good price, but I think I'm after the TomToms.
