Hi,

I know that gsr electric windows have been covered quite a bit as its a common problem, howeve rmy question is quite specific and thought it deserved its own thread.

The drivers side window is refusing to go up, and the tiny bit it can go down it seems to struggle. Took the door trim off to find that the cable that pulls it up and down is frayed quite badly, so when it goes around the the cog, it gets stuck.

Do i need to replace the whole lot, or can just the cable be replaced? Looks pretty tricky as theres bugger all space in there. Is this a job that can be considered to do myself, or should i go to an auto elec?

I really dont have the budget to be forking out much over $50, so if the window has to stay shut over summer then that may be the case.

Cheers!

you cant replace the cable AFAIK, youll have to buy a new regulator which will be ~117 bucks from mitsu.

More than that Dan.

They wanted $400 for the whole thing(inc motor) and like $200 up here for the regulator in Townsville.

CVAP have them too

$150+ for a window regulator

$400+ for a motor if yours is farked. (Doubtful)

The cable gets tangled. I installed my window regulator with auto electrician. Wasnt too hard/complicated in the end. I actually thought i could fix the tangled cable, but meh, new one is better.

To fix the tangled cable, from memory, it was held in, and you would need to drill out the joints, realigned/fix cable tracks, and then use some pop rivets to put it back together.

I have my broken one somewhere, i think dad may have thrown it out though now, but if i find it (doubtful), ill take a picture.

thanks for the info guys. Looks like im up for quite a few bucks. Fairly sure the motor is perfectly fine, its just the cable. I dunno, maybe i could just cut off the frayed bits. It wont be perfect, but could do the job until i can afford to fix it properly.

No, it doesnt fray. It gets tangled around the wheel. You'd have to drill it out so you can untangle the cable, fix the grooves, and put it back together with some pop rivets. I need a pic of my old one but dad threw it out :(

what ever happened to the good old gear type mechanisms!

no problems at all!

touch wood! :D

Why arent these things screwed in? what a pain in the ass! I dont even know any one with a pop rivet gun or whatever it is you use with them.

So you think it can be untangled, without needing a new cable?

Well, me & dad thought we proberly could have fixed it, but weren't too sure how long it would have lasted before it got tangled again. My cable didnt look frayed. The end bit of the cable wasn't right though. The outer part had slide down from the end of the cable i think from memory, if that makes any sense?

And yea, the reel where they cable goes around is not screwed down, its in one piece, so you have to drill out the points holding it down, then we thought we'd pop rivet it back together.

Never fixed it though in the end, as i just bought a new one, and the old one was on the garage floor before dad chucked it out about 6 weeks later. Wish I had taken a pic now.

As dan said, you cant get a new cable.

its definately frayed! quite mashed too, so it simply cant go up and down simply because it no longer fits through the metal cover on the reel.

OK, so i guess im looking for a regulator then.

Will both a gsr, and evo 1-3 regulator be exactly the same?
I'll try and get a s/h first, before I look to getting brand new.

My other question, it may take me a while before i get this fixed (no money at all will do it). If i cut the cable, will the window drop? I really need to have the window the whole way up so I can still use my car. Im not bothered if the window cant come down, but so long as it stays up.

No one i can see is mentioning that the new regulators are a revised part and have a metal bracket to reinforce the plastic ends that crack in the early models.
Well worth buying a new one.

didnt have much luck at the wreckers for a s/h regulator, the only place that had one wanted $195 as it came with the motor.

Adelaide Jap said its a piss easy job and would only charge $25, and there was no drilling out or pop riveting required. Others said it would take an hour @ $80.

Had some luck with a brand new part though. Rang mitsubishi and they were able to order one from townsville (apparantly the only one available in aus). Price is $110 which is pretty decent. Hopefully my motor never dies coz that would cost $400 to replace!

You have to be F#$%ing kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They wanted to charge me HEAPS more for that

Plus they sent not exactly what i wanted. Man i was pissed off with TSV mitsubishi

I now have a spare motor if that ever happens  I would hook you up half price man  :D

that sucks mate. Well im definately not taking the part home if its not exactly the one i need. Although i may not know until i try and fit it.

ooo i didnt know that! :)
tnxs :)

oh gilly i got mine from nunawading, melb mitsubishi (in stock), dont understand how townsville is the only one that has it, but meh, doesnt matter :)

Oh and it just looks like a long slightly curved pole with a reel & cable :p

got it all fixed today. The part arrived from townsville, and ended up being $122 (the bloke didnt include gst). Went to a wrecker and had it fitted for $25.

I watched him do it, so it should be a fairly simple job if it ever happens again.

Definately no drilling and pot riveting required! Just 6 bolts and its out!

Yea just a few bolts and another person to hold up the window :)
(I also think i saw my auto electrician cut something from old regulator)

Only drilling required if you wanted to get that reel off to fix the grooves/untangled the cable :p

$25 is cheap as btw...
