Mid-year rallysprint video. Cars going well, lots of runs now with no mech issues. Engine feels strong and consistent. New steering wheel and position to help me become a more technically correct steerer. Now I'm used to the feel of it, I will duck tape my hands to 3 & 9 and stop doing this shuffling shit. I have been learnered that it is bad technique.

Alrighty. Two weeks till Targa West so been getting all friendly with the car.

Thank to Brian's shed clear out, we got some bits to stiffen the tired and soggy chassis.

The recce's have been done over the last few weeks, with a final run through next weekend after srcutineering. The stages we are doing are mainly fast and flowing with a few truly terrifying bits where if your notes are off, you'll properly die. I be the first to admit I don't really have a big enough set of balls for tarmac rally, so many, many hours have been spent making sure the notes are good and true.

The best thing is, there will be an early EVO (one with the engine the right way round) banging around in Targa West. It's been a while.

Yeah Jack, I had heaps on the hinge bolts, about 15-18mm. I didn't measure the exact length of angle I used but if your good at Tetris you just feed the angle into the hole towards to front of the car until it can't go any more, mark then chop. Gives you about 200mm of angle to use that you can easily get in and out without having to unpick or cut anything else on the car. Time didn't let me weld the angle in, but will do it when time permits, carrying too much weight in bolts, Dougmo will be having kittens.

No idea how it feels, don't chuck the car around in public with all the stickers on, bad press and all that if you get caught. It has made a noticeable difference to how much the car bends when you jack it on the north/south bar. Given the amount of droop I use to get when dropping it on the axle stands, it has taken up a lot of the slop in that part of the chassis.

Its a type 3 with an added harness bar Brian. Picture attached.

Cage.jpg

Stiffens the centre of the chassis, but does nothing for the two ends. Needs bars of the harness bar to the end of the chassis rails in the boot, and then some from the A pillar bars through to the strut towers to be of any use in making the car tighter. But I dont think your allowed to do that with a bolt in. Need to do a fully welded cage, or steal Todds Ralliart chassis.

I want a pair of those fender braces, have been meaning to get some for a while now and you've inspired me!

Have you tried the Redline gear oil and what sort of oil pressure are you getting at idle after a run on the 15W-50?

Stayed away from redline oil in the gearbox, it hasn't been getting a good rap of late. Would happily use it in the transfer case thou. Just sticking with what's been working for me so far.

I get about 5-6psi at idle (900rpm) when engine temps are between 90-100c. Oil pressure has been a real issue for me with this engine. I built it loose deliberately but I'm starting to think it was the wrong move. Oil pressure during a run is fine, and about 40-50psi at cruise. I need to install a rolling idle into the tune to help keep the juices flowing after a run, but need to see one written into a map to understand how to do it. When I use to run edge 5w40, I had nothing registering on the oil gauge on hot idle and needed to keep it at 1200 or so to keep pressure. Maybe I get bored easy and do this to myself to stay busy......... I don't know :-?

I could do it physically. Problem is that the cage was log booked in 2006, if I go making big changes to it now, CAMS may make the changes retrospective of the regs now, which will mean the cage won't pass for national events. I need to look into it further, but life hasn't got dull enough to torture myself with 'death by the CAMS manual' yet.

The budget for the rest of the year is non-existent so will be doing a full strip down after this event. Will be taking stock of everything and deciding on developing this car or getting a pre-loved later model with all the hard work done. I do have a slight itch to do some skids in the dirt, gonna have to scratch that at some point before I get more pussy than I already am.
