Hi everyone, i just recently purchased a 92 Evo GSR from Japan, it's been modified. From what i can tell, it has an apex-i acr boost controller, aftermarket exhaust, cusco full customizable suspension, brembo big brakes up front, 17 rims, momo steering wheel, aftermarket front bumper, and strut tower bars all around. I have no idea what has been done to the motor, but it seems safe to run 1.2 bar boost. But i have a problem.
When i start my car and head to work in the morning, the car runs fine, until i boost hard. It's starts to 'hop' and 'clunk' when i make corners to change streets, it doesn't do it on wide corners. It only comes from the front end, and ceases when i apply the clutch (roll through a corner). It doesn't go away until i parked the car for like 4 hours or more. Any ideas?

Does it only happen after you loose traction??

plate type front lsd?.........if yes try a LITTLE friction modifer in the box oil.

by chance has it got redline shockproof oil in the box?

bmgtz

No it happen after i boost, and the rear is locking too. I'm assuming its the center diff.I had my oil changed this weekend, the oil in the rear diff is the same and the transmission. Have no idea what it is, they said posibly atf.

i would say mechanical diff centres too

depends though, its hard to say with your description

If it has LSD you should be using LSD oil, if not normal gear oil should be used, not ATF. Transfer case should be running gear oil as well

Viscous LSD's are sealed and don't require LSD oil.

Sounds like the transfer case and/or the centre diff is poked. Check the oil levels :)

I just got my car checked and it was the centre tail shaft bearing that had been playing up, its a normal bit to break because of the age of the car

its the same, it would only play up on corners but when I drive a straight line its ok

all you do to test it is hold both sides with your hands and twist the oppsite way from each other and if there is play its broke mate

its beetween $100-$200AUD

but its in the centre of the tail shaft, its a hanger bearing, which works as a tail shaft loop also

is your car the red one on youtube gold rims I think? I would love to know more about the brembo setup in the front and some pics ;)

it's sound seems to come from the front drivers side, like something loose, but i shook the wheels with my hands, and nothing budged. i didn't see anything underneath loose when i was at the lube shop, i'll try to get a vid with sound. can this tail shaft repair be done by an ameatur? And is it in any of these manuals? >>> http://www.ecanfix.com/users/manualcd/gift/dsm/index.html

yea, it hasn't gone away. It becomes more 'clunky' sounding when i turn right. my mechanic friend says it my be the hubs. But he's not used to awd cars like mine. any ideas? i will try to get a sound clip this weekend.

have you put proper lsd oil into the diff yet?

a plate lsd with the wrong type of oil will clunk and graunch horribly and pretty well fits the description you gave.

a friend has an evo6 he imported from japan (built by Cruise workshop) and going around tight corners with a little power on it sounded like the whole rear end of the car was falling apart! (honestly i couldn't believe how loud it was) - some bright spark had filled the diff with normal gear oil, once we got some decent lsd oil into it most of the noise was gone.

Plate lsd's (especially tight aftermarket types) will always cause some degree of annoyance when turning at low speeds.

I'm not sure what the deal is with running lsd oil in a transaxle, - does anyone know how synchro's etc cope with this?

sounds like the above problem. im running a cusco front LSD and had the same prob when i installed it only cos i didnt know i had to put LSD oil in once i changed to LSD oil it went away but it still clunks now on tight corners and trying to park but it wont all go away. you have to rememeber if it is a aftermarket lsd its going to lockup harder then some stock lsd hence y it will still clunk to a degree.

I use castrol LSX 90 in my rear plate lsd.
I'm pretty sure it says Limited Slip Differential on it.

As for in the box, I haven't used it in the 'box as I've still got an open front diff.

diesti?
