LSD problems?

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

i'm highly assuming the car was used for racing in japan, but the was no report of its history when i bought it. How would i know if the front diff has been swapped too? I did notice when i was idling a circle around my buddy that it felt like both front and rear tires where 'hopping'. And also will this problem create further damages to other components?

yeh vr4-squid thats wot i use in my box its the only lsd oil i can find so i used it. if the wrong oil is your problem you will know straight away but if it doesnt change really at all then mayb thats wot it does cos i know mine still hops and knocks abit but thats cos the lsd is aftermarket and locks up hard at the slightest accelaration. no it wont cause problems for anything else or components.

I've got a factory plate lsd out of an early RS in the rear of my car, but it's been modified (tighter shims, more preload) and it's the same.

abit of hop and knock is nothing to worry about - gets some strange looks from the general public - but if you don't like it you can always buy a hyundai :p

yeh i get alot ppl looking at my car when im trying to park or anytime it starts knocking you can just tell wot they r thinking "oh no somethings wrong with that car" but we all know there is nothing wrong. mine prolly knocks more the yours vr4-squid cos mines FWD and as well the diff is in the box so i only have to turn abit to make it knocks.

haha, mines not too bad now the cars rwd - before i pulled the front shafts out though, with the locked centre and tight rear, it was nasty
having a paddle clutch helps too

RWD would b fun thou wouldnt it?? I run a HD Ceramic so it locks hard which adds to the affect of the LSD.

it's -17 today, the diff doesn't lock up like it was when it's warmer, it hasn't made a clunk or hop today. A logical guess would be the oil, if it's thicker now because of the cold and working properly, and runnier when if gets warmer and not working properly, it is the problem. But i haven't boosted much today too, haven some turbo issues.

If I were you when i bought the car I would have changed rear diff oil and transfer case oil first up Castrol LS 90 or equivalent.

did you change all the fluids????though...????
as whom ever you bought it off or prepped it for sale may have used incorrect lsd specific oil hence your issue's!

shouldnt make a diffrence if you have boosted it or not it will still clunk n carry on. but the weather may make the diffrence thou but then again i dunno cos i dont have the diffrence in temp like you.

ok i wanna change the oil but i need some help.Does this model evo have a viscous coupling? Where is the front lsd? This castrol lsx 90, do you mean 90 wieght all i see is gear oil with 2 numbers? This info will help me get the proper fluids, i'd appreciate any input.

the vcu and the front diff are in the gearbox

you first need to find out what sort of diffs your car has
in the front and back

viscous lsd,mechanical or open(no lsd)
either combination could be fitted. each one requires different
things

say the rear diff, and the front diff are the same setup, what would i use in the box? I took some pics, the tranny has i side tranny (assuming center diff) beside it.

Front diff and gear box are all in one, the small "tranny" on the side is your transfer case or right angle drive, this just requires standard gearbox oil.
I think you may need special viscosity oils due to the extreme temperatures you have, there will be info out there on the net about it all, but if it is really cold the oil may frezze or somthing simelar and could be 1/2 the cause of your issues..

Since you just got the car over from Japan? it may well have the wrong temperature grade oils in it (including engine oil)

Thats your trasfer case (a.k.a right angle drive)

Get your wheels off the ground. When you spin 1 wheel in the forward direction the other should also spin forward, meaning you have a LSD diff.

If the other wheel spins in the opposite direction then you have a OPEN diff (non LSD)

There should be a sticker on your rear diff, saying LSD. It might have come off though over the years, but this is what the one on my 1994 RVR looks like:

mine has a japanese sticker over it, i have no idea what it says, do you know anyone who can read it?(i'll post it next post). And i had my car jacked up on one side, i tried to rotate my front drivers side tire, it would only move like a 1/20 of a turn, and i tried really hard to turn it. i will go try to jack up just the front end tomorrow and try. I haven't changed any of the diffs or tranny fluids yet, just the engine, got amsoil 5w-30. And does this spinning technique work for both front and rear?
