ok, what car do i have??

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Suede A pillars. no idea what the points to. A list with pics of what is Jap spec, and what is A spec would be fantastic for new guys. if there was someway to collate and point out the differences between them

Also the Boot numberplate surround/ garnish, is BLACK and hidden lights. not the same tail/ stop light plastic all the way across the rear. whatever difference that is also?

NFC if any of the interior pics i've attached are usefull. but hey, they cant hurt

That's a facelift J-Spec, with an A-spec FWD Galant VIN...

Pre facelifts have a colour change dash cluster, no lid on the dash, no aerial in the rear quarter panel, plastic A-pillar trims and tail lights/garnishes like these:

Facelifts don't have the colour change switch on the dash cluster, lid on top of dash, suede A-pillar trims, speak grilles in front doors, aerial in rear quarter panel and tail lights/garnishes like these:

Facelifts also have the projector style foglights, 1" brake master cylinders etc.

1987 models (pre, pre-facelift lol) have the three diamonds logo on the bonnet instead of the grille and a fuel flap that opens with a key.

Then there's A-spec VR4, USDM VR4, Super VR4, VR4 'EVO', VR4 RS (both facelift and pre-facelift) and VR4 Monte Carlo versions- but we won't go there because you're probably already confused!

keep throwing the info out. im not planning to sell this car. so the more i know about them the better. especially about working out exactly what i have ( no matter how it came about being).
for certain, mine has the electric fold in mirrors. and the fuel filler is NOT key operated. all this still pointing to "facelift J spec?"

ABS warning light is like a "slippery when wet" out of control car inside a circle and what look like brake shoes outside that.

Yep... that and facelifts have roof mounted map lights near the rear view mirror, single board eprom (datalogable/chipable) twin pot front brakes too. Also a bit more power compared to the pre-facelifts....

hmm well, ive got the Md150427 twin pot brakes, and the map lights. so its certainly looking like a 100% jap spec VR4. but damned if can work out the reason for it being labled as E33A.

If it is 1990+ then there was a change in the import laws a few years ago effectively stopping the import of anything built after 1990.
They may have been getting around that law, if that is the case then I would not like to have an accident where someone ends up injured as you may find yourself uninsured if they look over the car with a fine tooth comb.
I'd do a LOT more checking on this one just to be safe!

Since facelifts were never available for import into Australia due to the end of the 15 year old rule, some people found other ways to get them road registered- i.e 6T9REP (repairable write off VIN) 6T9REB (rebuild VIN) via a loophole around 10 years ago. Seems like this has had a local VIN used on an import car, which i'm pretty sure is illegal....? It was probably brought in as a race/rally only car, or right when the loophole closed.

I just looked up your plates and it says your Engine number is KG8180? Is that what it says on your rego label?

thanks Guys. will keep hunting down info. if only i could get somebody that could check the VIN and see what it says the car is supposed to be, that would answer a lot of things.

i looked at the font thing wasnt sure to make much of it. the marks on my strut tower are where i gave it a bit of a clean prior to the pic, not "brush" marks from painting dodgy stuff.

I reckon it was a 1990 HG Galant, like this.........

and an imported jap spec VR4 EVERYTHING was trasplanted into it? HUGE amount of work to strip both back to bare, and swap it all over? more likely to be restamped i spose. seems more logical since the build and compliance plates are only riveted on.
hmm, wonder what this may mean for insurance

hmm, thinking about it old school ways. its just like a driveline upgrade into a E33A. maybe at worst id need to go through a "MOD PLATE" scenario to get it legally recognised as a E33A with a VR4 conversion.
