P-plater crashed after turning off engine

Help Support 4GTuner:

whilst i believe that the people who teach kids to drive now days have a responsibilty to ensure the pupil they are instructing is capable of safely handling and driving a vehicle on our roads. I think it is the parents job to know that removing the keys from the ignition will lock the steering.....i try with my daughters to let them know what is and isnt safe practice.

the unfortunate side of this incident is there was some one killed and others injured ......and this begs the question. "are our young drivers and for that matter older drivers, well enough informed on the workings of their vehicle?"

I think not

I dont know if that stupid or sad...
I do think they should make all learners do a skid course, so people know, what its like to loose control if you mess up.

The computer tests i did 4 years ago to get my license were compleatly pointless in teaching or assesing me on anything i felt.

Something thats hands on other than the actual "driving test" should be done, to show people how to handle a car.

i would have said more along the lines of tightarsed...

I mean really, how much petrol are you going to save by rolling down a hill?

You'll use more starting the car up again a few hundred meters later than letting it idle with the clutch in.

Reckon he was actually trying keybangers?

IMO Defensive driving course should be mandatory prior to p plate license being issued. In germany you have to do a 3 month night course in basic mechanics as well

Again, it only confirms my case for the computer license tests to include normal car function and maintenance questions! ie. where do you put oil? what do you do when temperature reads red on your gauges? should you remove the keys form the ignition whilst driving? and practical tests like changing globes and changing a flat tyre! How many people who get a flat wouldnt have a fkn clue where the spare is let alone how to use a jack! :( If you are going to have a license for a car, then you need to know how to look after it. Same goes for if you want to have a license for a gun...

I agree 100%.

I can understand if he was in neutral whilst not far from home but doing that is silly and sadly he learned the hard way, i agree with the testing side of things, there really should be more attention paid to driveing skill and ability.

3 months for everyone? So even 16-18 year old princesses know how to change oil? Thats German efficiency!

Suprised they didnt try to arrest the passengers for "hooning while not driving" or something equally preposterous

How some people get their licences these days is beyond me. Bring in the German style of licences- they have half the road toll of Australia, but they get to travel as fast as they want on the best roads in the world.

I agree with you there Rob except for the bit about changing globes as on many new cars this is getting to be (rightly or wrongly) quite a difficult task.

I went over to help a guy from school change a tire at a party, he didn't know why the tire was sticking out 20cm form the guard.

He put it on back to front ha ha :w00t:

Now a bloke like that, using a jack, could have easily taken his leg off in the process.

TOOL

Not to mention my boss of my part time job.... at a "certain auto shop" trying for 15min to take a spark plug out of someones car with a spark plug wrench, with the knuckle strait up so there no leverage, trying to twist it with his fingers, and the wrong way.
he manages a car shop......

Food for thought.
I have just started taking my 18 year old out on his L plates. Unfortunately Dad knows nothing and 18 year old is all knowing. I do my best.
Obviously even driver training schools don't always state what is taken for granted?? OR do the young ones just not listen??
