how bad is bad when it comes to ur motor knocking?

i.e. if ur motor knocks, say, once every 15mins or so on average during regular driving without giving it to the car, is that bad?

not continuous knock, just random ones but on average about 15mins each time it happens. its happening on and off boost, most noticeably, it knocked before when i was in 4th cruising towards 5th, slightly on the pedal (maybe about 0.1 bar of boost?)

im asking this because i need to drive my car to the tuner and its a 40min drive, dont really want it to pop before i make it lol...

edit: by knock i mean, i have the flashed e7 ecu with the tephra mod that flashes the CEL light when it knocks

i was thinking that too, if i get knock at WOT then fair enough, but i get it whilst slightly on boost... and my turbos not THAT big.. lol

Get a scan tool with some decent software on it to read how much knock its reading. If 1 or 2 counts I wouldn't be worried.

What have you had installed that has made it start knocking?

agreed or at least a datalogger that shows your knock count

but like if your trying too save money make it as far as you can until knock becomes excessive and then call a tow truck

Why is this even a question? Knock/pinging is possibly the worst thing for an engine besides not having oil. Just tow it.

i second that LOL

i talked to a guy who tunes superlap cars (who is going to tune my car) he said that my car has a sensitive knock sensor and not to worry too much, my sensor just needs to be slightly modified, as long as i dont WOT all the way to 8000 i should be fine. i.e. regular joe driving and to ignore those rexxies (omg how am i suppose to do that).

his other explanation was that the e7 ecu ran out of resolution up top (thats why it pingo on 4th gear pull) and i forgot the reason for 2nd gear ping lol

clutz: i shall get said scan tool to make sure its not a reading of more than 3. new turbo + stock injectors + e7 ecu with RA map flash... thats why it go ding ding

Yeah I was going to say, if you dont floor it, it should be sweet. Knocking on deceleration or changing down should be ignored aswell- i've had cars that would show 1 or 2 knock counts changing down which i'm 99% sure as phantom.

If you still feel uncomfortable, chuck the old injectors and ECU in, and put them back in when you get it tuned. Should only take you 10 mins

Just dont go loading it up off boost with WOT and use the throttle as if it were made of glass...cracked glass...cracked glass thats about to break even..
The less load you put on it by being in the right gear at the right time, the better it will be...and stay off boost completely..but I'm sure you, and most of the others here understand this principle anyway

Just cruise...no load, no boost..and it shouldnt have any need to ping..that is assuming your current tune is a reasonable one, and not a completely reset map with values all over the joint..

Have you tried using a different brand of fuel? how old is the fuel in the tank? If it is just tiny knock registering on a meter then it probably is ok, but if it is audible thats not cool.

What is a 'knock LED'?
I am running [x] PSI on my car, and my knock LED flashes! Is my setup ok?

A 'knock LED' is a light wired up to the boost control solenoid (BCS) on the engine. The short answers to the other three questions are: Probably, no, and probably not.
Despite it's name, the 'knock LED' DOES NOT MEASURE KNOCK. [Doubters take heed: it DOES NOT.] All the LED is doing is informing you when the boost control solenoid has been tripped by the ECU. This has only the vaguest relation to knock, as there are many other non-knock circumstances that will cause the BCS to trip. This quite possibly gives the 'knock LED' the distinction of being the worst-named modification in the history of DSMs.

About the only time that you can be certain the 'knock LED' is reporting knock is when it is solidly on. This indicates a last-ditch attempt by the ECU to limit boost, which can only occur when the engine is knocking for prolonged periods of time.
The LED will also flash when the ECU is attempting to limit the turbo boost (1G and 2G cars); when the ECU is "smoothing" out the normal turbo operation (2Gs); and when the car is first started and the ECU transitions the solenoid from fully closed to fully open (all turbo cars). These occurances are perfectly normal and not cause for concern.
As for the question of whether or not your engine is ok, you will only know that by looking at the operational setup and the circumstances under which you believe you may have damaged the engine. If you have been following the typical guidelines for upgrading your engine, you are probably fine. If you have upgraded your engine past the recommended guidelines or had some catastrophic event occur, your engine may be damaged. In real terms, 99% of people who are concerned about their knock LED flashing have absolutely nothing to worry about. The Last Word: Anyone who actually takes the time to put in a "knock LED" by now is wasting their time. Not that it was ever really useful to begin with.

think you misunderstood me there buddy

my e7 ecu has a specially modified ROM on there that flashes (not constant on) the CEL light when the motor knocks (as in, actual real knock, wired to the actual knock sensor)

my exhaust has no resonators so i cant hear knock at all (or anything for that matter lol)

and yes i have upgraded my boltons WAY past the typical guidelines for my engine

one thing i noticed was taht, i fueled up to the top with vortex98 and it knocked about 4x in a 20min drive, but ever since that 20min drive, its only randomly knocked once in a long while. it actually hasnt knocked the for the last 150km or so

anyway answer to your question, its running too much timing in low load/cruise region of the map. either run 100ron or live with the knocks till its tuned... but if you are booting it and the CEL flashes, its not good at all and you should back off.
