Django, I also have the 38mm piping as well. Fit snug and easy, bare in mind that I only run 16psi though. I checked for looseness of connection after the first few longer drives and it has had no issues at all mate.
If its a stock style they have to be plumbed in. When manifold vacuum is high the bov opens. (Of course)
But if this is at idle or decell then airflow is reversed through the bov and air bypasses the turbo into the engine. If you are not plumbed in then that air is unmetered.
