i might be upgrading pistons and rods and going for a good 300kw++ at all 4 and maybe a 8 - 9000rpm redline

how good is the stock crankshaft? ive been told "it should be right" but i would just like to hear from others on this...

How much power are you making on stock crank??

cheers
Adrian

Inspect it to make sure its in good condition, and have it balanced.
Then it will handle your power & rpm requirement.

I broke a stock one with 300hp atw .. it was checked before hand too. When we were rebuilding the motor (the next day  ), I considered putting an Eagle crank in it, but after calling around a bunch of workshops who were big on Mitsus, it really sounded like it was a freak occurance rather than a problem with the crank.

I put a stocker back in now, and the car has made 440hp atw for the last 15k kilometers with out a problem.

I'd say save the money :)

Again, just one of many real life examples of big HP, Rob Barac's 9 second passes with a stock EVO crank :D Spend your money elsewhere dude

Probably only ever heard of less than half a dozen break ever.

Alot of the problems these days are the bearings, make sure u get decent bearing and you wont have a problem spinnin the bearing and then... buying a new crank

make sure you get it crack tested before you do anything, they are prone to crack in the undercut radius on the 4th journal, if it isnt already cracked, then its happy days :D

whats the go with these cranks floating?? i had a mate that has his float 3mm. no wonder why he went thru 2 clutches in just a few months. is it a very common problem?? also is it common throughout the 4g63 range like e1-3 and VR-4??

That's exactly where mine went :)

We micro polished all of the counter weights, then nitrited the crank, after 2 years of racing it it finaly cracked :D so I put in a completly standard one(after getting it nitrited) and ran it another 2 years. It cracked in the same spot too, so I ended up buying an eagle crank(still a 2 litre) and ran it for another 3 years.I still have the 2 litre bottom end sitting at home for a rainy day :D (not for sale).
So in early 06 I went the 2.4 with the eagle bottom end and have been running it since.

how much did it cost to have the crank nitrided and micro polished? im guessing it wouldnt have lasted long if you didnt?

did you crack the 9's with the 2.0L? or was it only when you went 2.4L??

Hi Adrian, the good machine shops will always crack test, micropolish and balance the cranks as part of the service, but the nitriding of the EVO crank costs extra. If your machine shop doesnt do it then find another place that does it all :) . Always ask what you will be getting for your $$ before handing your parts over to the shop or mechanic.

Rob can you answer this??

i believe it is caused by the oil squirters jaming open and
bleeding off oil preuuse to the crankshaft.

replace the check valves in the squirters with new genuine ones
