Street Legal High Power Exhaust???

So one of the big problems that we are all faced with when building these monsters and driving them on a day to day basis is...
You want power but yet you don't want attention from the Po Po so what do you do???
I'm currently investigating some exhaust options for my 2004 Evolution MR.

My last car was a 2002 WRX and having learnt from that, you can't simply run a straight through 3 inch exhaust with a cannon on the back.
Great for power, but when your getting EPA'd twice a month, you know it's getting ridiculous.

So i've been doing some research on some quiet exhaust options that will also give good power and flow, here they are...

So to set some rules for this post, i'm trying to find a legal exhaust that will give me good flow, whilst staying under 90db or close to.
 

I have a feeling the Po Po arn't to friendly about Varex systems.
If they see you running a Varex system they'll EPA you...
Do not pass Go, do not collect $200 dollars and go straight to EPA...

I'd rather not having the hassle of changing exhaust systems again.
Even though EVO's look a lot easier then the WRX.

But the Xforce system does look quiet.

the jap exhausts all flange down to smaller sizes on the flange points to keep the noise down, so a 70mm system is 60mm at its smallest points
 
Your right there George, Although i'm sure you can still run them as a mid muffler if that would hide it more from view?
 
Fuji RM01A tapers down to 2.25inch at points, makes great torque for stock turbo applications.

Look at the TurboXS with oval muffler.

Mate of mine used a Varex before the diff, sprayed it black and straight pipe afterwards, works a treat.

I heard good things about Magnflow exhaust systems, i know a performance exhaust shop near me that use their mufflers.
Not sure if theres any benefits going custom over buying a package from these big reputable brands...
 
I don’t really see it as much of an "upgrade" to an exhaust that chokes down the 2.25 inches in spots. The larger the better on a turbo car. Even on a moderate setup car you want 2.5 inch if you can’t keep it quite wiht mufflers but ideally 3 inch, and keep it quiet with an oval centre muffler, and oval rear muffler and if you can fit in a resonator all the better.

Check out Lukey/Walker mufflers they have some nice strait through oval mufflers and also (if i remember correctly) "super turbo" muffler for the rear, that have an S bend inside, not chambers. And they claim they still flow well for the noise the absorb. There’s an online catalogue I’m pretty sure take a look.
 
if your going Jap exhaust, stick to anything with a JASMA plate welded to it (but they have some restrictions inside them)

if you going Magna flow, i dont recommend any of round cannon looking mufflers by them (ones built for the rear of the car) as they also have restrictive parts internally (not all, but there website doesnt state which ones do and dont) but there series of straight through stainless mufflers are one of the best you can buy...

Lukey, walker etc are same as above (magna flow) but some have fiberglass internals instead of stainless packing

Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers are really good considering there size, using frequency cancellation techniques instead of packing to absorb noise (i'm yet to put one on a turbo car though)

considering your looking for an 04 EVO MR, you have very little space to play with under the car, your more then likely going to end up with a straight pipe to a very large rear muffler for clearance.....

Its nice to get a accurate break downs of the companies and the differences.
So JASMA standards are slightly different to standards in Vic.
JASMA noise pollution is 93db whereas in Vic we are 90db.
So this is proving a problem since very difficult to get an idea of how loud the exhausts are since not many people have them.
And the people who do have them, are running them on track cars, or simply don't care about noise pollution.
I live in the Eastern Suburbs of melbourne.
And especially around the knox area, po po enjoy pulling over cars that are noisy or to low..

Another company i've heard great things about are Remus.
And although they boast about meeting EPA regulations, you don't get much details on flow.
I guess like Magna Flow you purchase the muffler, resonator and cats separately and get a exhaust shop to fit the pipping.
I've also heard remus are very very expensive...

Remus are good, but from what i saw in 2004ish (a cut out at BMW show room), they have versions of there mufflers with fiberglass packing and stainless packing, and they dont tell you which one you get... flow wise there like every other "stock upgrad/replacement" exhaust system they have to follow ADR and Emissions so they will have some sort of restriction. also notice that Remus never put massive tips on there exhausts, when they do the out side it big, but the internal diam is still matched to the piping...

yes JASMA is slightly different from us but its a start, even with a 93 DB from a new exhaust, you can always add a hot dogs or a another muffler to it (if you have the space) to make it even less loud.... also most JASMA plated exhausts are not tru 3", they are 2.75" to keep the noise levels down...

just a rule of thumb, people say the exhaust tips wont make a diff.... they do just not noticeable by our ears .... from experience a 5" tip vs a 3" stright pipe, the 3" can be that 3 DB quieter on the road side test etc. also the longer the exhaust tip the better (pending space), it changes the exhaust note from deep to higher pitch, also lessens drone (not always, but it can)

material choice is also another factor, Stainless VS Mild steel. Stainless would be around the 304 grade 1.6MM wall VS Mild steel ERW 1.6MM. stainless is lighter, but it tends to leak out some of the sounds through its walls and can sound "tinny", mild is heavier but it is very good for holding the exhaust note till the end of the exhaust. (i suggest seeing for your self, ask someone with a stainless exhaust to rev it, and compare it to someone with a mild steel exhaust)

if your in the south east..... try Performance Exhaust Ringwood, and speak to David.. they have Magna flow stuff on shelf, and have displays of them. Have a look at the displays and you will see what i mean about the rear mufflers having restrictions etc....

are you planning a turbo back exhaust or just cat back?
 
For the time being cat back only because I most likely get a branded dump pipe list trust or tomei or hks...

I've been to performance exhaust before. They built a high flow cat into a dump pipe for the Rex.. And also built a stock exhaust for me for whenever I got EPA'd...
 
So i popped pasty Performance Exhaust yesterday on the way back from a Golf Game, and i spoke to David.
David told me that it's not possible for him to build a full 3 inch exhaust system with no cut downs in size to get the noise at 90db.
He notified me that what he would usually do is use a Muffler that cuts down to 2.5 in the muffler that takes some noise off and Resonators.
But he seemed to believe that you could only fit 1 resonator to a 04 EVO MR.
He did say that he could get the noise down to 92-93db with one resonator.

Conundrum this is...
 
The HKS Silent is exactly that. My friend runs a cat-back system on his 9 and is quiet as, when he opens up the throttle it sounds like a quiet jet. (250awkw's).
I'm sure HKS do use 2.75" systems. (Well my Hi-power is on my TME).

What db reading is your HKS high power silent making at idle???
