Hi all,
Just wandering what oil people are using on their GSR's .
I dont know how far this engines gone, or it history.
But I am pretty sure its been worked hard.
I threw in some magnatec that I had laying around.
Unfortunately Its blowing smoke even at idle.
I suspect the rings but havent yet checked the compression.

I am wondering if some other oil might help
Any Suggestions?

thanks
Emil

I use penrite mineral oil...15/50

I found that magnatec did the same thing as it is for you...even in a good engine

Yep thanks Brian,
Was thinking some 15/50 penrite or similar.
maybe even diesel oil to clean out some gunge, valve train wasnt ideal when I did the rocker cover.
Previous owner left the oil changes a bit to long.
Magnatec is pretty watery but i wasnt sure if the engine would start so I didnt want to spend money on oil that I would drop pretty soon.

How old is the engine Emil? Ive never tried the diesel oil in one of these....I guess it could work to remove a bit of sludge given the extra detergents in the oil for soot contamination. BUT the bottom line is if she is rooted...not much any oil can do.

Another thing to look at....check that all the breathers and PCV are flowing well and not blocked as that can cause oil burning issues/

i found a good oil for the money is penrite racing 10tenths 15w50 full synthetic and full zinc.
I use this for track racing but not always on the street.
lets just say you can go on all day about how full synthetic is a full synthetic but I come across details that the Nulon is rubbish.
I mean what is even wrong with Magnatec.
If your rings are shot then they are spot. You probably have to use some bomb car 20w70 to keep it from burning.

Well I drained the oil and threw in some penrite 15/50 diesel . It seems to have settled it down a bit.
The vid is from before I swapped the oil, It does get worse.
I wonder if I could have a turbo problem , could the seals in the turbo housing be leaking engine oil into the exhaust housing?
It could be valve stem seals, if this was the case it would tend to be worse after a period of idling, but it tends to smoke after a couple of revs. .
However it seems to be that it smokes after I rev it a couple of times, could the turbo be building a little boost and pushing some oil into the exhaust.
I dont want to rip out the engine , pulling off the turbo would be the lesser of two evils.
I havent yet done a compression test but think I will have to, What readings should I get??

Thanks
Emil

looks more like steam (white rather than blue oil) to me done a pressure test on the cooling system? maybe a head gasket

If its smoking stick with a 15W50 or 20W50. Stay away form the thinnner 10W40 and 10W30.
Penrite advertise on the bottle they have a good ammount of zinc in their oils (the HPR and SIN series not the enviro ones) which is a good lubricant for turbo's.

looks like turbo to me.

BUT to me....it also didnt seem to be reved hard enough to see if there is a build up on over run

Hi Brian,
I suspect that , not really keen to rev the guts out of it , It smokes after a its been idling a little while, but no huge clouds when your driving. Suspect it the valve stem seals.

However it is also leaking a little oil from near the turbo oil feed on the head. I fear I will need to replace the head gasket :(
Still having issues with rego etc.
I think I might have to catch up for some parts.

lets just say you can go on all day about how full synthetic is a full synthetic but I come across details that the Nulon is rubbish.

I was using Nulon and was having a "smokey" issue as well as having to top up every week _ then I changed to MOTUL 8100 10w40 *havent seen any since

Previous owner run Castrol GTX3 15-40
Then I started using Motul 4100 Turbo Light 10-40
Then I started using some Castrol Magnetic 10-40 because Motul is expensive

Now mostly its whatever the mechanic puts in it, can't remember what brand drum he buys...
