id definitely go a cc evo.

handling is so much more responsive compared to the newer ones i reckon.

I cant totally agree there pete, the late cars are prety good, I say that and my car turns a bit better than the 8 I drove on the weekend but my car also has 3.2 neg on the front and 2.1 on the rear and a big fat rear sway bar.the 8 I drove had about 1.5 on the front and .5 rear with really soft springs(tarmac rally setup)and stock bars.

the earlier cars(1-6 even) "dance" alot more than 7s on but the grip of the later cars means you can be alot more commited and the car will still hang in there.

imo the biggest thing that helps an evo turn in is a good wheel alignment and a good front lsd.

it also comes down to personal preferance(I like cars that dance as it gets the blood pumping)but the confidence the extra grip provides is nice.

A 3 RS would be my first choice, followed by a 6 RS I think ...

getting a car thats already got all the gear would be great

in 1-3 the extra cash for rs isnt worth it imo(4-6 then yes it is for sure), if you have a gsr like i got you have hepas of bits to sell too like seats, electric regs, fold in mirrors, climate etc.......

the rs's have some silly unique parts that are really hard to find(eg:window regs are on there own-not same as gl),ad you already know how to get the deadener out:thumbsup:
the diffs are the same and the gear ratios etc...

Porsche GT3 Cup... oh hang on.... lol
An Evo 6.5 would be the choice. Totally stripped down nude and fitted with all the good stuff.

the catch with 6.5s is that they still have ayc. still does a great job on the road(and even on tarmac rally) but an rs rear end makes an even bigger difference.

or second vote here for a gt3 aswell

I'd get a FD RX7 as a track car, for its proven track record, huge aftermarket support, and not to mention the fun factor of a high revving, turbo, rear wheel drive car, with a lovely chassis designed exactly for this kind of thing.

Something under-powered and cheap because I'd probably write it off learning how to track it. Then move up to some sort of clubman-type kit car running a small 4-banger engine (20V 1.6L corrolla engine) when experience dictates.

How about a genuine facelift EK9 ?

I already ahve a set of DMS 50mm coilies for it sitting here :p

Yeah that's more like it Dan.

Seriously I wouldn't dump a crapload of cash into your first "learn how to drive" car.

If you don't want a RWD then yeah I reckon an E3 RS would be cool. You'll need to get your CAMS L3 license beforehand though.

200awkw is still a lot. Personally I'd be trying to learn how to be fast with as little power as possible.

All you need for a e3rs is natsoft timing results from a few track days thats it. apply for the import with this as proof you want it for track work its been done alot of time so its proven.

The best best best part of this thread?

People are realising there's more to racing than 400m strips. :D
Couldn't agree more Entaran

the best thing about a 6.5 is that the RS brackets for the RS diff are already welded to the chassis  making a rs rear end a bolt on job

If I were in the same position I would track the gsr you already have shed loads of others do it with very few acco's or buya toyota throw a 20 valve NA in there and rape it all day long shunt it when you feel like it and you'll save shed loads on parts and panels for a track day car
Also if you just want to entre the nats why wouldnt you just enter it full stop.:)

id get an ae82 twin cam rolla. Cheap dedicated track car to maintain, and is an awsome hillclimb car.

Would be just as much fun as an evo (my personal opinion) and would cost a SHIT LOAD cheaper too! Plus you still learn the racing 'fundamentals' which is the whole purpose of the exersize.

EDIT: Libz read my mind!

If you buy a Honda you'll be the brunt of a thousand 'vtec just kicked in... yoooo!!!!" jokes . I'll be the first one waiting in line to dish it out too lol :p
If it wwere me, if I couldnt go AWD my next choice would be RWD, but definitely not FWD. Something in the Nissan variety in RWD would be go as there's plenty of kickass parts and go fast bits around for cheap.

I have considered a dedicated toy car and my choice would be a Sil80 or silvia.

Reasons I would go the silvia/sil80 are as follows:
- Cheap to start with
- Lots of Aftermarket support
- Plenty of R&D Done with proven performance
- Plenty of wheel choices
- Panels etc are cheap and many around

CONS
- Different to AWD
