understeer issues

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Not as yet George, I have a whiteline rear strut brace and the whiteline camber bolts, which I hope to fit during my holidays next fortnight, I did the Domain hillclimb without any changes just a slight reduction in tyre pressure and the car felt really good...ended up placing 5th out of 45 entries (even ate up a couple of sti poobarus :p ) but i guess thats a totally different ballgame to running laps at baskerville.
Think the club day calendar starts in 6 weeks so will fit the gear and try a bit of camber and head out for some practice laps to see if i can get some improvement in lap times, think i also need to experiment with tyre pressure a bit more too,if i find a happy medium i might be able to fine tune it with some adjustments to the coilovers.
I improved vastly last year as it was my first ever run at track racing and ended up pulling 3 seconds off my lap times by the end of the season,if i can sort out the understeer issues i am confident i can knock 1 to 2 seconds off again,It also may be the nut behind the steering wheel that is the problem  as i may be trying to corner a little to aggresive,so will try a few different lines and techniques to see if i can corner a little more smoothly.
I will post a picture of my front tyres when i get home..$900 worth of rubber totally shagged after 4 club days and one hillclimb all from understeer tearing them to pieces :(
I have my camera fitted now too,so will post up some footage when i go for a practice,as you are a baskerville fan, i love it out there its a great little circuit.

AWESOME,

i didnt know that the domain was still run,

my old man used to run his bugeye sprite up there years ago.

when i come down i go up there in the skyline on my way
to ferntree.

i love that road.

do you have any more castor on the car at all? as in bushes?

if not noltec tops will be good for extra castor

Its a great course, its also great that a motorsport event is run pretty much right in the centre of Hobart, I dont think too many capital cities have that to offer!
No castor adjustments as yet,i was looking at getting a set of dms tops,do you think they would be ok or would i be better off with the noltec ones?

4 club days = track days?

That's pretty good if so I think .. I shagged a near new set of V70As on the front in one track day at Wakefield :(

If I could get 4 track days out of them, I think I'd be pretty happy?

Let us know how you go with the castor adjustments .. I'm having the same problems with my GSR (-2 degrees for the street, still understeers .. the rubber is reasonably good). I was thinking about jamming as much castor into the front as I can get to increase dynamic camber and hopefully dial it out a bit.

No worries steve, will let you know if i can get any improvement.....one track day for a set of tyres  ...were they just the fronts? as my rears are still fine...it equates to around 50 laps of a 2 km circuit, where as some of the guys i run with are using the same tyres ( toyo r888 ) and have got close to 2 club day seasons out of them?...i may need to find some cheaper rubber!

Yeah, just the fronts, the rears barely saw any wear at all ! The car wasn't actually understeering much that day (which I put down to the good rubber rather than suspension), though I did have chronic wheel spin issues on corner exit

I seem to chew out fronts fairly regularly on my nugget (at least twice as quickly as the rears, if not faster), even just with street driving, so I'm hoping I can run a bit less static camber when I dial in a good whack of caster

As far as I know, there really aren't any downsides to putting as much caster in to the fronts as you can, so I should just bite the bullet and do it. Does any one know of any?

the dms strut tops will give better results than
noltec i believe. at least when it comes to castor.

a few people i know have upgraded from noltec to dms.

dms is dear though

Yes they were fairly pricey last time i enquired about them....oh well i have this pattern forming at the moment where everything to do with the car costs a ridiculous amount of money (much to the mrs delight ) so i would hate to break the trend..dms ones might be a goer

i just did a bit of research.

if you get the club spec noltecs they should get just as good
results as the dms ones.

if you use the street type noltecs you wont get enough camber/castor

Thanks George, do you know roughly how much they are?...i think last time i enquired about the dms ones..they were around $500 a unit...does that sound right?

DOUGMO said:
NAH, they are not that much.

i think only around $600 a pair

noltec around $500

PHEW...thanks for that, i will look into getting some, hopefully will make a big improvement.

I have the street specs, and ruin -1.25, can run umm, close to 5, but im special

Got a call from Jamie Drummond this morning,my spring rates are fairly soft..350 front, 250 rear, he suggested to maybe go harder springs in the rear but i really need to get an lsd and ralliart coupling before i try anything else?
Also asked him about the adjustable strut tops he said they will allow a bit more camber and castor adjustment but they dont fit the evo straight off the shelf and something about the pcd needs to be filed out? also they can be mounted on top of the tower rather than underneath....does anyone have any advice on getting them to fit?
cheers scott.

if your spring rates are that soft your shock adjustment must be fairly
firm, have you backed it off at all yet?

checked them tonight...drivers side was 29 clicks off hard and passenger side was 24 off hard  ..backed them both off to 18 and dropped the front slightly, seems like options may be limited!!...also fittted my rear strut bar and the car does feel better for it.
