4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Just got off the phone with the machinist. The flywheel was like a bowl. Thats why it was only gripping the outside edge. Whoever machined it should be sacked :D

HeadTorque ozzie park actually. That flywheel is beyong repair apparently. Going to machine my old flywheel a little and should be good to go. Just waiting for a price quote on a clutch :)

EDIT: see what you meant now, just to clarify, it wasn't headtorque who did the poor machining, I don't know who did that.

Only cauze your not there eh?

Only because I know first hand the limitations on some of the equipment that was there when I was there. Don't get me wrong, not bashing them........... Just asking.

while you up under there check your harmonic balancer (if it's a g93) pull the end nut off and check the key-way locating grove and key-way for damage

Ok, will have a look next time I'm there, don't think we ever looked at it. heck, I hardly even know what it does, should do some research!

well heres what driving on a bad one for 20 hours will do to it

thats supposed to have a 30mm notch in it

ohhh, the crank pulley, I was thinking of a shaft that runs inside the engine, on the DSM's I think? Can't remember.
Um yeh, isn't that supposed to have the little keyhole notch? :D
I'm using an aluminium underdrive pulley and apart from the totally misaligned timing notch on it (probably for the satria or something) it seems fine for now :)

Well, bought an Exedy clutch plate and a pressure plate from Clutch and Brake Australia, the guy modified the pressure plate to 'Heavy duty' spec. Reassembled it all this afternoon/evening. Starts fine and seems to idle ok but the clutch feels like a wet sponge and it wont go into gear, you just hear it bouncing off :( Slave cylinder seems to have full travel, and yes we did bleed the system.
And for some new reason if I rev it a little it jumps up to 1500rpm and sits there (doubt this has anything to do with the clutch assembly :D probably just missed something)
Any spontaneous ideas?

...a little bad news. You now need to pull the gearbox out and put a washer under the pivot ball.

when a clutch plate wears the fingers of the pressure get slightly closer to the release bearing so you dont notice the wear in the old components.

now when its reassembled you probably have a bit of wear on the inside of the fork and the end of the ball....plus any flywheel machining has moved the clutch further away from the release bearing.

add it all together and it needs about a 2 to 2.5mm washer under the ball.

having said all that...to check that this is the actual cause. move the external part of the clutch fork till you feel it contact the pressure plate. It should be at a point just before mid way in the in the window of the gearbox...if not. Remove and correct

Ok cool, same thing as Jafro said in his 'clutch & trans 8' video. Going to go have a fiddle around with it now. Check out 'JafroMobile' on youtube, he's pretty helpful (for those of us that don't know everything about these cars ;) )

So, bled system and fiddled with peddle adjustment, no change. Car creeps backwards if you put it in reverse, start it, and rev it.
So the gearbox's out. Clutch isn't in backwards :p no horrible marks on the flywheel, step is pretty much 15mm exactly. Don't think it's the ball joint because it wasn't giving us any trouble before, why would it now?

fully back

fully extended

flywheel

pressure plate

Pressure plate is a Seco SCMB-342.
Could it be the fingers in the pressure plate not having enough travel? If the ball joint is spaced it looks like the throwout bearing would run out of shaft to slide along

Yeah but perhaps the stroke you are get by hand isn't the same as what your slave cylinder is getting. Honestly ig thr is nothing else obvious I would go with a washer to spacenthe pivot ball as I have had this drama on more then one occasion, and it seems to exacerbated by a heavy duty clutch. Which kinda makes sense, as it requires more force to disengage and also clutch olate is new and therefore thicker.

Yeh, the spacing method makes sense. just don't want to put it all back together again and find that the guy modified the pressure plate incorrectly and that the spacer has no effect :fuuuuu:
What kind of spacer do you guys reckon for a 15mm step? 2mm/3mm? would that extra 1mm make a huge difference, or does it just need something under there
