Hey guys :)

My brother in law recently picked up a vr4 and apparently from what he has been told from the mechanic 1,2,3 gears are no good and he will need to get a new box....

What is the better option, should we buy a 2nd hand box or get it recoed??

also what are our prices? how much should he be lookin at ?

can anyone help us out as well? in regards to finding a good one ? or good repairer ?

Its for an Aus Spec car

cheers guys :)

i would get it recoed, the problem with buying second hand boxes is you don't know what they have been through, how many k's they have done or what condition it is in, until you put it in the car and drive it

er, just realised that last post of mine was meant to start with if you

nothing worse than putting a replacement box in and having it howl like a banshee because the bearings are focked.

well if he is cruisin its ok, but if he puts his foot down it will begin to make all kinds of noise from the box so the box has had it. Just gears 4 and 5 are ok.....

he has had a qoute of about 1700 to rebuild it, but if we could find somethin cheaper that would be great!!!!

I looked in for sale section, but no one seems to be selling any 2nd hand boxes.....

exactly which parts are they going to replace? - does that quote to 'fix' it include pulling the box out?

all the bearings in the box come to about $400 if someone you know can hook you up, otherwise they'll be alot more. (that's kiwi dollars btw)

synchro's aren't particularly expensive, but if you've got damaged gears or shafts, obviously it's going to cost ALOT more.

labour is the big killer, especially if they have to remove the box too.

so, to decide if a quote is good value for money, we need to know exactly what your getting.

well from what he has told me, the gears are no good and that shaft that makes it 4wd has had it apparently....
i still havent spoken to the mechanic.....

and the price im pretty sure includes remove and fit as well.....

anyone else got any info or contacts in the game ?

Hey Barbs,

I got one for sale with the transfer case for $350

Otherwise, contact EKW in Keilor..I payed $650 pick-up for a J-spec box and transfer case, add $10 if you want it delivered.

A mate of mine had his VR4 box reconditioned with new bearings + oil and triple synchros out of an E3,fitted/pulled apart and installed all the labour for $1100-$1200.And that was fixing a broken shift fork too i think

Id be lloking at the same price
