Theres some fuckwit replies on that page.
In NSW the police are in plain open sight and have a sign before the mobile camera advising "mobile speed camera in use".
The aim is to make their presence known and actually REDUCE the speed of vehicles whilst they are present onsite, which makes an immediate safer environment to motorists.
The Vic Police way of doing it is to hide and let people get away with speeding for the rest of their trip, meanwhile still carrying the risk til they get to their destination.
Its the difference between a state govt that has 'road safety' in their sights, and a state govt that has 'revenue' in their sights.

Every K over is a dollar! I think all I want to say has been said, but let me just add; WTF? more cameras, more tickets, more fatalities? pfft, yeah it's working. What's next? A hidden mobile dog turd camera aimed to stop random neighbourhood dogs laying cable in a cable free zone? A camera hidden in sand dunes fining chunky arse people who defile the vision of everyone else by wearing clothes in a size they wish they were? What a bunch of arse clowns.

Ridiculous... I hate how they always justify it with "the road toll is less than this time last year".... as if its justification for their actions, like as if nothing else contributed to it apart from whatever they are doing.
I've got an unproved theory. Possible that people have wises up to cameras and what they look like and where they will be so revenue has noticeably dropped. So to bring it back up again they use the cover of safety to bring the hit rate back up again

Think like cops. Kinda highlights the problem. People will be driving checking speedo constantly and then looking at things off the road thinking " could there be a cop behind there" then as they drive past checking to see. All this taking people off focusing on the road itself and checking their mirrors to see what's happening around them. Sounds like they are cracking down on one problem for safety by causing another problem. Visual presence of authority makes most people behave a lot more affectively over the big brother "could" be watching you approach. Then you have the people who say "fuck da po-lice" and they will do what they want either way. And they are the people who need the special attention. And again only way for that is a physical visual presence for immediate action
Don't know where you drive around Gianni, but it sounds like a nice place! Over here in Perth, I would be stoked if people were actively looking up the road for hidden cameras, or checking there mirrors for the sneaky bike copper hiding in the traffic.It means that their not looking at their laps txt'ing.
Unfortunately, most people have become very far removed from the actual job of driving, that's probably due to lots of things, not least the pace of life. If you look at how people function in traffic, it is rare to see someone any more involved in their driving than checking the brake lights of the car in front of them. Most drivers don't have the capacity to analyse anything further ahead than the car in front and this is the main cause of arse-enders.
With cars that park themselves, brake themselves, stop skids themselves and whatever other shit they can do themselves now, it is little wonder that most drivers on the road have removed themselves from the hassle of actually having to drive the car.
If your been driving for 5 years and you cant judge your speed to within 5km of the posted speed limit without looking at your speedo, you really should practice until you can, it's not hard, it's a skill you can learn. And while your looking up the road thinking 'is there a cop behind there?' It's often a good idea to think other things like:
- What are my options if that kid on his bike is going to dart out from behind that car?
- I wonder what my PNR is for those lights is given that it's wet?
- What are my options for when that bus pulls out of the bus bay?
- The cars 8 ahead of me have all jumped on the brake, I'll back off and open a gap, give myself room to brake normally.
All this used to be called 'driving'.

I completely agree Gianni, Police presence is a massive deterrent. I have concerns about the police service's duty of care. And even though I disagree with the methods, camera fine revenue is justifiable in some ways, but what is offered in return?

Are they going to the source of the problem? It's not just speed that causes accidents. The Member for the Brisbane seat of Ryan, Michael Johnson, stated that "conventional driving tests are failing to educate young motorists on the dangers of excessive speed, drinking and using mobile phones". Education would be a great place to start rather than creating contempt about the Police service. Up in QLD they have changed the signage from "Speeding? You will be caught" to a more caring approach of "don't let us meet by accident" a complete flip around of the psychology of campaigns. A lot of our fines happen when we are relatively new to driving, or new to performance cars. It took a while for me to educate myself to think about consequences of my actions, and that is an all inclusive concept. They need to put more thought into what they are hoping to achieve. I still think they are arse clowns.
Funds from motoring offences should be put solely into victims of motoring accidents, road maintenance, upgrades ect.
Funds from drug offences should again go to victims of drug abuse/crime and fund rehab programs ect.
Taxes should be divided around as needed but direct revenue from fines or fees (licence rego ect) should be solely put into those direct projects. If the funds dramatically increase to the point where there is too much left over and not enough roads to fix ect then the result is to lower the rego fees for that year.
