OK, finally got around to putting tyres on my replacement rims.. look good! Anyway, upon trying to fit them I found the nuts I bought for them were wrong...

OK so there is 12mm of thread available to attach a nut onto. I took the wheel down to sprint and the guy said he could get nuts to suit the wheel, but he isn't comfortable with that small amount of thread, and suggests I replace the wheel studs with longer ones.

To me that sounds like good advice, but I am not an expert on this matter. The way the nut will mount to the rim/stud it will be very snug indeed, and the holes in the wheel don't allow any play at all on the studs. Also the hole design means I have to use a chamfered nut.

If it's necessary to replace the studs.. how much of a pain in the arse is it? I had a look at the service manual and it doesn't look particularly easy... do you reckon I could get it done as part of a wheel alignment?
Or, is 12mm of thread enough to safely hold the wheels on the rim?

Oh, edit, would it be safe/possible to just drill the hole a little deeper so theres more thread?

Pics please.
What is so different about the wheels that causes this problem?
Are the wheels hub-centric?
12mm of thread on an M12 stud should be ok with a Steel nut as long as the wheels are hub-centric, I would not use aluminium nuts though. Tapered nuts will give you some more bite on the threads.

you can get longer studs from nice products but the are not really strong...ok for road though but not ideal for extra load etc...

or maybe some arp wheel studs....or you could go rally style and use falcon 1/2 inch studs which are big and strong

Ah really, the nice ones aren't very strong? Are they at least as strong as the OEM type?

couldnt say for sure mate...i had them on my rx7 with spacers and the were fine... they just didnt look that strong (quality didnt look the best) thats all... i never had any issues with them but with bigger spacers than i had or more load it might be a bit different...

I dunno, the hubs on the wheels are humungous, almost spacer size... I guess if I ever think of taking the car off-road I'll need to replace them :D :D

Are the wheels hub-centric? If they aren't, the studs will have to take a whole heap more load. As well as holding the wheel on, they will also have to hold the car off the ground. I would not go longer studs unless the wheels were hub-centric.
