Well as many of you may be aware I work as a mechanic @ a Subaru Dealership, today a 99 WRX came in with a "rattle" that only seems to be there on boost.
Ok so I have to road test it to listen for the origin of this rattle, drive off down the road, can hear a bit of a rattle sounds like from exhaust heat sheild. Anyway had stopped at the lights and took off 1st..........Bang WTF I nearly shit myself I've just broken 2nd gear.. no it's not a myth Subaru 5 speed boxes are shit!
So now I gotta fix the fucker. pic's to come..
Meanwhile this car has only had a new heavy duty clutch installed for about a week so it was just my luck it broke on me as it had it coming...

That was one of the deciding factors in buying a mitsu, I was tossing up between a Rex and an Evo until everyone told me how bad the boxes were...

I would have a wrx sti 22B, but it would be the only one

the 6 speed evo boxes are common to break also though

I can't say no because we have a 2008 WRX (in blue)...

But yeah, glass gearbox :(

the 00/01 wrx's have better gearboxes than the 99 and previous.

pretty much standard to run a custom box in rex's now isn't it? i think thats how ppg survive as a business.

I agree with Sivart. There is no WRX or STI that I would really want to own other than the 22B...

I purchased an Evo 6 recently... and my old man asked me why I didn't decide upon a WRX. I lol'd uncontrollably...

Yeah the 90's models Rexys were well known for weak boxes and axles. They've come a long way since then though... probably reverse engineered some other make's boxes since then lol

No bullshit my sisters b/f has just had a business problem about 1month back and is seriously thinking about selling his rex its a 05 and cheap as, he would be happy with 15K to me or put it on the market for 20K and being that cheap for an 05 it still doesnt tempt me.
I drove it and dont mind it but wont spend my money on it.

used to own an 01 rex. blew 1st and 2nd gears 1 week after replacing clutch, it was just a sports ceramic clutch too!! replaced the box, sold the car months later. a few days after selling, the new owner called and told me he had blown the gearbox too, even though i told him they have weak boxes!! poor guy.

apparently the oz delivered rexy have n/a gearboxes. the jap specs are supposed to have the stronger boxes.

wow, i just thort the evo's outhandled em, ive liked rexys an did want 1 but didnt wanna be 1 of 100,000 rexys out there,

I would have a wrx sti 22B
+ juan.

When I took my GSR to get a new clutch kit, the mechanic looked at the number of k's it'd done and said:

"115,000...that's about 5 clutches and 2 gear box rebuilds in a rex".

In all honesty, I can't think of too many good points about wrx's. Plenty of friends have owned them, including very fast ones. The gearbox's are rubbish(6 speed is nice), they are relatively laggy with large turbo's, and the steering has absolutely no feedback at all. I don't know why, in a performance car, you would give it such pathetic steering, its beyond me.

Stock though, they aren't too bad, just dont drive them like a performance car, and you wont have too many issues. Engines seem fairly strong, however I still think they are junk.

Lol.. I'm positive arent I

I actually really like the current STi, however would never own one.

As a daily driver the 08 WRX is actually really really good, but we've had it for 18 months now and apart from a new set of tyres it hasn't had a cent spent on it. I can't even bring myself to get a catback for it haha

I was hunting for my car for about a year and a half, drove heaps of differnt imports and i just loved awd. Which put me onto the wrx. Better than the celeca gt4 at least. I found it more fun to drive a lightly modded wrx than a 440 rwhp skyline. I loved being sucked around sorners.

I did some reading on liberty rs and wrx forums and realised
people seemed to start breaking them around the 160kw at all 4 mark, in the classic shape. So for any decent power and be able to do half a launch, you need to upgrade the gearbox.

I had the idea of a vr4 in the back of my head, but there were none to test drive when i was looking.
The day i drove the vr4 i now own i bought it on the spot
Its fun to do a 6K launch next to wrx's :p
The money i will have to put into my vr4 to run a high 12 will be much less than a wrx, coz i dont need a ppg or sti box for starters.

The Gearbox that I broke...
