Z411 Ryco Filter issue

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

got a response on thier face book pageaparently nothing has changed but they do use "different approved suppliers" so this is probably a bad batch

Bought a new Z411 from my local Supershit a few weeks ago and it spun on fine last night, althought i didnt tighten it up or start the car... Will have to double check it

Yep I've been doing what Jack suggested, I can't go a wider filter because my relocator sits the filter right in the corner of the inner guard. Could go slightly longer but I kind of like that the filter doesn't hang lower than it does.
This is my setup;

The plan is to see what Ryco come back to me with, hopefully before the end of the week. The ones I sent them arrived at their Melbourne premises today so I'll just see what they have to say when I hear from them.
I await their reply also........did you mention the bulk lot you are expecting for your troubles?

Going to wait and see what they come up with first. Once they confirm there is a defect I'll put in my requests.

I chased them up today for an ETA on the claim as my car is still off the road and I'm reluctant to purchase another filter because I might end up with the same problem.

Still waiting to hear back from them

So I just received a call back from Ryco regarding the filters.

There was a bit of a language barrier with the guy that called me, but he basically said that the first filter (the one that screwed on), was from a different factory to the other two filters, however the threads on all three filters were to within spec.

I questioned why I would have problems with one over the other and he said I need to make sure I screw it on perfectly straight or it won't screw on properly, he said that the first filter screwed on fine but the other two are a bit tricky. I then explained that I screwed the other two on straight but they never bottomed out and just kept spinning, it wasn't a matter of them cross threading. I then asked how they could still be the same specifications if the first filter screws on but the other two don't. As I said, there was a bit of a language barrier and the guy kept repeating himself every time I asked why I'd have this issue.

He said he'll send me three brand new filters from the "first factory" and I should try them and see if it solves my problem. When I asked if I need to make sure that when I buy filters from now on that they come from a different factory, he said "no you shouldn't have any problems, you just need to make sure you screw them on straight" - again we started going around in circles.

The plan now is to test these filters he's going to send, and if they work I'll use them for the next three oil changes and then go to Genuine Mitsubishi filters, as I cannot be bothered going through the trial and error with Ryco filters anymore.

Kind of annoying after all of that, but again probably something worth letting you all know about.

Below is their exact response via email...

Hi Vince,

Refer to Claim#18984 Z411; Proton Satria GTi 4G93T 2001 (rebuilt engine)

Three returned filters were checked OK with the master M20 x 1.5P GO & NGO thread gauge as attached photograph. I can assure you that both types of the Z411 are suitable for the vehicle application.
Unfortunately we would not be able to fault these returned and what actually causes the unexpected fitting issue can be difficult for us to confirm especially when the filter is not on the vehicle it was fitted to.

As discussed, I have arranged brand new 3 units of Z411 to be sent out via the Startrack courier to the address stated in the claim form.

Again, thank you for taking the time and effort in sending these filters back to us and I hope you continue as a valued Ryco customer.

Doesn't tell me much, but anyway...

Yeah, that really shows how they all screw tight on the housing? Muppets. K&N do a 411 equivalent, used them in the past without issue.

does the thread where the filter go on have any clear shank?

what I mean is does the thread go all the way down the male part where the filter screws on?

and do the filters that spin have one or two less threads?

At a glance the new filters seemed to have a shorter thread on them. I also think the issue may be in that the top plates on the new filters sit further down, meaning the thread can't grab to tighten properly.
Unfortunately I didn't have my vernier on me to measure everything and check.
I think I'll be going to K&N equivalent from now on which is a shame for Ryco. I expected a more in depth investigation than just having them screw a bolt into the filters. Especially considering this could be an issue at the point of manufacture and something that could cause others to change brands.

Maybe you should reply to them with that comment above and let them know that other forum members will be following suit due to their lack of caring response. I would.

Hi all, I had a possible idea on what might be happening here. Maybe the thread on the Evo's are a 20mm taper thread , which means if this top plate is a different design not allowing the filter to screw on using the full thread then you would only get the smaller taper thread trying to tighten up which would allow the thread to slip. Taper threads will allow the filter to start spin on easier and then progressively tighten up. That thread gauge he would be using is probably a parallel thread gauge. I know that everytime I change the oil filter on the ZR4, the first say 15mm of screwing the filter on, it is loose on the thread due to a taper thread design but the time it goes the full 25mm of travel, the thread is a tight fit even before the oil seal contacts. My idea is, if this top plate design maybe only lets you screw the filter on 15mm then you are still on the taper part of the thread. This is only an idea of the reason why, but of course doesn't solve the problems unfortunately.

Has the adaptor (threaded section) on your remote filter screwed into the body too far? Its just a pipe with thread on both ends. Pretty sure i unthreaded mine and took it to shop when i didnt know what filter i needed.
I had some issue like that but i cant for the life of me remember the details.

I was thinking the same thing Jack, but the thread piece has a small section where the thread stops, so you can't screw it in further than its supposed to go. And I know I put the shorter thread side in the relocator because there is at least an inch of thread to get the filter on with.

Below is a pic of the kit I'm running, you can see the thread on the bottom right hand side which shows a short and a long section of thread and it's divided by a small section where the thread stops.

I was thinking of taking the thread out to send with the filters, however it's been loctited in and I don't think it'll come out without damaging the thread.

Turbovr4,I think the taper at the start of the filter also makes the thread sit lower in the filter meaning it runs out of thread before tightening up.

Evo-gsr, if the filters that come in the mail have the same issue then that will be my response I think.

Got my three filters in the mail yesterday, and surprise surprise they are the old style filter which screw in perfectly.

I notice they are also in new packaging which tells me that they may have re visited the design due to a flaw they knew they had.

Especially since when I emailed them back to ask that they measure the distance between the seal and the top of the thread and was ignored.

Anyway, I posted something on their Facebook page explaining my experience and asking why I need to now check every filter I buy and potentially never find the filter I need, and what the point is of part numbers of they refere to two different parts? I think it needs to go through a review process before they put it on their public page. Did this happen with you Kyle?

Anyway, these are the correct filters in the new packaging. What a pain in the ass.
