Hey guys,

I was always wondering when I had my old GGSR whether it could easily be converted to AWD or not but after plenty of searching, there wasn't much information on it.
I've sold that car long ago but now another one has popped up and I'm thinking of tackling this again.
I remember with my old GGSR, it had a lump in the floorpan where the middle rear passenger feet go.
I assumed that was provision for a tailshaft and that perhaps they simply shared the same shell as a ZR4? In which case I'd assume there wouldn't much much involved in the conversion?

I've a spare A-Spec VR4 shell from which I can rip the driveline from, but does anyone have a definitive answer to this question?
If cutting out and replacing floorpans or anything similarly difficult is required, I'll forget it, but if it just a matter of removing stuff from the VR4 and bolting into the GGSR (with the exception of maybe a custom tailshaft? or other small manageable things) I'd love to do it.

Thanks!

It can be done , look in members rides for widebody zr4 by jayrome. He has done it , im doin a gsr drag car at the moment but leaving it fwd . After much crawling around under there weve come to the conclusion it really wouldnt be that hard to do , the main thing we can see is the fuel tank and spare wheel well being a problem. Plus you will need to use the vr4 front k frame as its a diff shape to acomadate awd setup. I f you have the vr4 sitting there im sure it would be straight forward , id unpick the wheel well from vr4 and spot weld it in gsr and use vr4 tank then hit up jayromes build thread to see how he mounted the rear diff assembly

Thanks dude. I didn't realise Jay did an AWD conversion. I knew it was only a matter for time with him.. haha

Its no where near as straight forward as people think...

Front seats back, the GGSR is a completely different car...

Vr4 fuel tank wont work on GGSR, the rear boot floor is actually lower and the chassis rails takes a different direction to a VR4

you need to cut the tunnel to fit both the exhaust and the tail shaft

there are a fair few mounts you need to pick off the VR4 to weld onto the GGSR

front K frame is not direct bolt in

Fuel and brake lines to the rear need to be changed or custom made (cant use VR4 brake lines as they lead to ABS not brake master)

The above is just a very small list of what i have gone through... there are heaps of little things you need to swap over...

Easiest way would be to cut the floor pan out, mid car to rear, but even thats not straight forward....

I'd either put the floor pan out of the vr4 into the gsr. Or if the vr4 she'll is registerable id cut the rear quarters and roof off the gsr and put them onto the vr4 :)

I think the latter would be easier and less to engineer Possibly could almost not even have to engineer it? Quater panels and roofs get replaced all day everyday

Thanks heaps for your replies guys. The car is still available but I think I'll give it a miss looking at that great big whopping list haha
I hand it to ya Jay, you got some balls!

Yeah, that wouldn't work either, roof heights/fenders/c-pillar are different and so are the internal supporting structures/frame work.... Would be hard to engineer if these were touched....

Hahah, I just dont mind a challenge :)

Yeah you would have take all the internal structure from the GSR, wheel wheels, shock towers everything join it all back at factory joins and do it properly

As long as the GSR and vr4 are the same at the A and B pillars the rest would be getting replaced Then you don't have to pull the running gear or anything

We replace Quaters, roofs, chassis rails and all the inner structure all the Time in smash repairs so I don't see how if done properly it would be hard to engineer

The first thing I noticed about the ZR4 compared to my Galant GSR was the tunnel in the floor pan is wider than the centre console and there is a huge extra part of the tunnel that protrudes into the passenger side floor are beside the shifter. Even the rear seat hinge mounts are different as the rear floor area is different. Like Jayome says, the boot is different as the spare wheel well is very shallow and they even have bolt on frames around the sides of the wheel well to raise the floor up another 50mm just to fit the space saver wheel. I know that it is only cosmetic that part, but just pointing out how the rear floor plan is radically different.

Definately too much work for me.
Jay, that's amazing man, what I see as water and oil, you just see as a challenge. Haha
I'll remember to check yor updates crazy man. Love your work. ;)
Thanks for all of the replies guys. At least if anyone ever considers this in future, they can find an answer here :)
