also weight does play a part.. i also think that camshafts and the compression ratio's of the motor play a part too as the evo 3 is more 'alive' with the higher comp then the vr4 is with the 7.8:1 (boost me up) comp.

Id almost put my house on it that the Evo 3 with the original motor is alot quicker then the vr4'ed one.. due to the fact that the motor is more 'punchy' with the higher comp and the gearing ratio...so itll get up and going ALOT quicker...

however that said.. turn the boost up on the vr4 equipped evo and it would almost be on par.
