I just want to know the import laws for VIC drivers in regards to importing cars from New Zealand...
I'll be going there early next year for a holiday and I'm wondering if its worth saving up and buying a mitsu over there, as they are dirt cheap compared to oz..

thanks,
alex

I looked at importing my old cyborg sedan into Aus- and figured out that its simply not worth it, you may as well go and buy a car from Japan.

For example, an EVO 0 VR4 in NZ would be anywhere between 6-10k, in Japan i've seen them go for $500.

The import laws are exactly the same if you were thinking about buying a car from anywhere else in the world.

What car are you thinking about buying anyway??

i was looking on trademe ; and it seems evo 4's are all over the place ; for around 16grand (NZ currency) ... was pretty surprised by that finding...

also CE GSR's have caought my eye 8) ..

yeh but you cant import an evo 4 or ce gsr anyways. The only way you can bring one in is via a personal import, so buiying one on holiday wont do, unless you live there for a whole year.

The only other way is if an australian resident living overseas (and has been for more than a year) wants to sell their car, you can do a personal import that way.

one advantage would be significantly lower shipping costs, compared to Japan.

thats not entirely true,

there are more ships frieghting between japan and australia, compared with nz and australia.

more ships, more space to fill, lower freight charges.

i looked very hard and seriously about bringing my old VR4 over from NZ and it just was not worth it.

i also just had a whole lot of old furniture shipped over from nz, i waited 10 weeks just for space in a contianer, slightly different i know. the bit that makes it so expensive for cars, is there are no R&R's between Au and NZ which means you NEED a contianer.

Regard's,
Craig.

Yeah thats the bummer, no roll on roll off ships going to and from N.Z!!

You have to get a container, and from memory it was going to cost me $3500 to bring a car over from N.Z
