ok a few days ago my car started making this weird noise,
it only happens when:
gears 2, 3 and 4
not it 1 and 5
no sound when clutch is in (no drive to gearbox)
rpm less than 2500

i thought the it was the plate on the front left that sits behind the disc, but that does not move one bit.
then i thought bearings but it doesnt do it all the time.

theres nothing loose and im starting to get concern as its getting louder and closer to the drag day.

please help

u have the 100% same noise i have... cheek ya drive shaft bolts... 1 of mine were loose for some reason, even though it had a cerclip... mine sounds alot better but still their at times... the wheel bearing has no movment... but i'm 90% sure its the wheel bearing...

does the noise sound like the backing plate is hitting the disc making a scrapping noise, but only some times, n when gearig down or slowing down 2500rpm

see if this helps... this was my old topic that may relate to yours

after market clutch

let me guess u have an after market clutch in, i bet it sounds like, u know know when sometimes its hard to get into reverse and when it goes it makes a echoey tinny sound,
if thats it, there is nothing to worry about, there is a big thread on here about it, ill see if i can find for you.

its not hard to get into reverse nor make any noise when in reverse.

the noise im talking happens when the car is in gears 2,3,4 only

noise

yeah, sorry i might have mislead ya. does it only make the noise when you back of in those gears.?

Does it sound like the pressure plate?
Do u have an after mraket clutch?

it sounds like metal on metal brushing up against each other eg like a washer that has room to move and rotate or 2 metal disc's rubbing up against eachother.

it doesnt happen when changing gears or anything like that it happens when i hav my foot NOT on the gas, pressing the brake does nothing but hav the clutch in it cuts drive to the wheels and the noise goes away.

which leads me to belive its drive related.

this might be way off the mark.....any way I would check your engine mounts. they may be screwed and allowing the engine/tranny assembly to roll under decelleration....as in when you just lift off the gas. this movement sometimes is excessive and causes other things to move out side of their intended range. I had a corolla that had almost zero movement of the mounts under acceleration but the other way made it sound like the inner cv was about to die.

the other weird thing that happened to my first lancer was the exhaust flex joint crapped itself.....didnt leak but had enough movement to make a rattle when I backed off

just suggestions...

it has a exedy h/d clutch its prob about 1 year + old now...
sounds like a intresting noise, may be inner/outter cv but who knows... gear box bearing? does it sounds like its comming from the drivers side?

thx azz its sounds like its coming from the front right drive shaft region.

im having a good look under the car 2moz and going over all the bolts i can find that i could as well.

yeah no probs

mmmm yeah mines coming from the front left too... (passager side) mine was the CV big nut loose, even though it has a split pin to stop it coming loose mine was still loose, has fixed 80% of the noise so far... let me know what u find...

i'm prob going to end up putting a new wheel bearing in mine... for the sake of $50-80, with the nut being loose for god knows how long prob would have damaged the bearing

this is just after the transfer case on the tail shaft heading towards the rear diff.

how can i make it so it does not move anymore i think this could b the problem.

what can i do?

p.s. sorry bout the dodgy pics i could not find my camera so i used my fone

If its the tailshaft movement into the transfer case movement your concerned about. Its meant to move a bit, say 20mm. that movement allows for the torque roll of the engine under load and the reverse direction under engine braking.

ok bu the thing in the pic that moves is'nt it like a say 'coller' the tail shaft doesnt move its the protector thing

how can i secure it?

ok so the silver thing with the flare on one end? it has most likely sustained a hit at some time causing the inner section where it fits to the transfer case to be deformed. it should be an interference fit. try this it has worked for me in similar situations, get a good hose clamp and unwind it so that it has an opening, put it around the offending part and make as close as possible to the front, make very tight in an attempt to crush the inner back to round.

if it works then good if not.....take the protector off but keep an eye on the seal of the transfer as that is there to stop mud and genereal crap from destroying it
